I hate that smell! I'm hoping the ones that were digging up my yard moved on. I was smelling them a few times a week but lately no smell or holes all over my yard. Now I just have to fi d out what got into my run last night. Hope the smell dies down soon for you.

oh, they'll be back if you have grubs , thats why they're digging holes, we had two babies in the yard a couple of weeks ago, we stood there watching the cute little things, but cute or not, they stink up the place so as of tonight, they don't get a second chance, sss. as for the run, if it moved a log, probably a coon, they're quite strong and if its coons, lock the chickens up nice and tight.

I was the one running for cover! I was in the middle of cleaning out the coop when the rain hit.


I've noticed some digging by the run but couldn't tell if it was from the chickens or not. They love to dig on the inside so I thought they did the small hole on the outside too. Last night it was bigger and appeared to go under the run. It was late so I blocked it off with a log. There were 2 silkie eggs in the bucket ( the silkies won't use the nest box. They lay in the run). I left them and intended to get them this morning to put in the incubator. I went out bright and early and the eggs were gone, the log was moved and the hole was bigger. Whatever it was didn't get to the chickens. Any guesses? I've noticed we are going through a lot of feed. Now I'm thinking if its a rodent it could be eating the feed too. I put gravel all around the outside of the run tonight in hopes to slow it down.

If it is coons, I can lend you my hand trap. Best coon trap EVER! Maybe in trade, slip me a few fertile silkie eggs in February...hmmmm?

I asked on the PA unite meet up/planning thread (I think that's what it was called) but didn't get many responses, so I'm gonna ask here.

Is anyone interested in coming to a chicken/livestock swap at the Delmont/Murrysville TSC on August 4th? It starts at 7 am, and is free setup.

I need a new POL pullet or hen. I have a really good bantam rooster, and I would only trust selling him to a fellow BYC member that I could keep in touch with. He's young, and actually attempted his first crow today at 7.5 weeks! I got 2 roos from the straight run bin, and would be willing to trade him for a pullet/hen or even just selling him to you and buying a different hen. Let me know if you'd like to come! You can reply on here or PM me!
 
Well, I got another egg this evening, or late this afternoon...my chicken can't tell time I guess...this is just the 2nd one I've gotten so far so I'm guessing they will eventually figure it out. I have a little concern that my one Buffy's might be a roo. Gracie, the smaller of the two is the one that is laying. How can I tell if it's a roo or not? They are both supposed to be 5-6 months old but Gertie is much larger. Gracie is the one with her head the highest & Gertie is the one closest to my hubby. Gertie has a bigger comb and wattles. I sure hope she is a she, she is my favorite, she is just so sweet and besides that I can't have a roo in the Burgh. It'll break my heart if I have to give "her" up. Appreciate any help. :-)






 
Oh wing, it has been so much fun! I have those metal 10 hole nest boxes, some of them would have 2-3 broodies in at one time!!!! I collected every egg I could find. I candled them all, 25 were viable to hatch so they went in the bator. I only kept Ameraucana eggs! Then I put the roost thingys in the up position. I kicked all hens out of the boxes. Next day, stupid hens got the roosts down. Removed all hens again and chained the roosts together. Next day no hens in nest boxes, woooooooooooohoooooooooooooo!!!!!! If I would have had to take those hens out again I would have been p i s s ................. ed! So my plan if they would be able to get in there again, I was going to take the bottoms out of the boxes! Could you imagine, they would keep trying to go in, and falling out the bottom, LOL!!!!! So far so good though.

My old man rooster Emmit, I think his time has come. He has chronic bumble foot. I think its in the bone. I have never had anybody else get this. let alone repeatedly. I am very sad he turned 6 years old this spring :-(

Chiques.......father in law hates it when we shoot things at the farm,,,we are looking for someone to come in and set traps that would then want to take the foxes (I think there's a couple of them)..we used to have a guy that did this, he would also shoot groundhogs for us when the father in law was not home,,,,this man was retired and could not get around real well to go hunting anymore, so keeping us critter free was good for him.

always looking to sell or trade...if nearby and interested give a holler...looking for a few more heritage breed turkey within the same age range as what I got.

also working on a project with my large meat bird cross roo, he will be given his own pen today with a few larger ladies, will start collecting eggs in 2 weeks and see what I get...the project roo is from a cross of delaware roo and freedom ranger hen...the hens he will will put with are all crosses also, so anything could show up...I will be picking the hen's by size and how fast they grew and matured..

I would have thought Gertie's comb and wattles would be larger than they are if its a boy but I don't raise BO's so I don't know a lot about them. I see your point about the size difference though. In my opinion, you're going to have to wait for an egg or a crow.

I don't have any BOs either but I agree with nbenevento, I'd think the comb and wattles would be even larger on a cockerel. I do know among my girls I have several that have much larger combs and wattles and are heavier than girls the same age and breed, and they're sex link so they're definitely girls. Hopefully someone with BOs can help ya.
