one laid two weeks ago...one 5-6 days ago two today....they were day olds on 02/24/2013......

on a side note, had a hawk fly in to my backyard today....scared the piss out of me....herd the screech and saw it landing on one of my trees....I ran out back as all nine of my birds were free ranging....when I went out the back door the hawk took off....I waited a few minutes then the baby marans came out from under a bush and back to their coop...the rest of the flock was hiding under my grape vines....about 5 mins later the hawk circled back and roosted in a neighbor's tree about 30yds from the coop....I walked down threw a stone at it.....it left for good..... need to monitor things a bit more closly....

Yeah that's not far what kind of chickens do you have? We have black and blue orps and speckled Sussex and two banty mixes. I getting 1 dozen eggs (Backyard mix) to put in the incubator :0)
Nothing yet :) Coop is setup but empty, looking locally for some chickens.

Yeah, you really have to watch for predators around here (comshy) and the Main Line even though we are super close to the city. We have hawks. My neighbor saved my Speckled Sussex, Rose, from a hawk that had her cornered under a tree. She used to escape while free ranging in the backyard. No longer. No free ranging unless I'm out there. I have also seen a red fox come trotting on by while waiting at my daughter's bus stop last fall. I lost two birds to an opossum that someone later ran over two weeks too late. And the most scary but interesting predator sighting was a couple of coyotes someone spotted several blocks from my house. They got a picture or I'd've never believed it.

I once heard my hen making her "there's a predator" noise as a hawk swooped past the living room window. I ran as fast as I could, and discovered a hawk running underneath the bush my hen was hiding under!!!

So I ran towards it screaming and yelling and it flew away. My hen was scared, but was otherwise fine.

THERE HERE!

Of course there is always a story...............................

I think you all are gonna think I did the wrong thing................I kinda think I might have done the wrong thing...................but here it is

I know have 3 6wk old chickens that lived together and one laying hen..........a new Hampshire red

the 3 younger ones are: silver laced Wyandotte, golden laced Wyandotte and easter egger
this was not the plan

this guy I purchased from keeps changing what he has available ----even though on Thursday he called to confirm

I was expecting 2 laying hens and 2-- 6wk olds and was discussing how to house them gradually together,,,,,,I am sure you recall.

Well now this 3:1 difference seems odd.................... the 3 youner ones are all huddled together in an upper roost in the coop, and the one big laying hen is by herself on a different roost bar.
I hope she does not feel lonely.

Its okay for the 3 because they are together and out of reach of the big hen.

I put water and grower mix in the coop and some watermelon.

the laying hen has her mouth open a lot..................is she panting or hot or stressed?

the 3 youngers are making cute sounds and seem cozy together...........

Its too dark for good pictures-----but I will definitely post tomorrow!

So now the stories will continue with who is getting along with who..................I DO WISH they were all the same age and had lived together..............just like you all recommended..............

I don't think I will purchase from this chicken guy again because he is constantly changing things up!

One thing he said to me too was the DE doesn't really work...........its just a myth.....................yet everywhere else I read good things about it.................

not sure he truly is informed?

yeppers....imho the hawk was after the marans babies...I think it was either a Broad Wing or Red Tail....I'd really hate to see my young roo mauled but I think his presence counts and the LFs might be too big for attack by a smaller predator hawks.......and my two pooches keep the ground predators backed off...just need to keep an eye for the next few days.....
