I have been getting some soft shells from my girls so 2 days ago I added free choice Oyster shells, well today we got 1 brown egg, 1 Ducks egg. and 2 soft/no shell eggs! I am still expecting 1 more egg from Nugget, she usually lays around 10. Any ideas what else I could do? IS it just a new layer thing? only 2 out of 7 pullets are laying consistently.. I am going to try mixing the oyster shell in with the food, will that harm the rooster at all?

Your roo will pick around the calcium as long as it's in big enough pieces. New layers often take a while to get the system going & have to work the kinks out. Expect a few softshells for a while until they figure out the laying process.

Okay. They are 18 weeks. Hopefully by the end of the month They will have all the kinks worked out. Still need 5 of my pullets to start laying, then again they could be laying the soft shells

Woke this morning with chick peeping loudly. Two of the three are in very poor shape. one is so weak, cannot walk-laying on side. Second chick is very wobbly also and just wants to sit. Third is upset but I think that one also is going the way of the others..getting more wobbly, but still able to run around. Their poo looks normal, they have been eating the same food. The set has not changed since I first put them in the brooder. They have only been outside one time-last weekend and that was very short. I have done nothing different in their care. If anyone has any ideas of what may be the issue I am all-ears. I have been hand-feeding them save-a-chck probotic and sugar water. It looks like something neurological or 'like' a poisoning, but I can not think of anything that would have made them sick. Thank you for your help. Danielle

roosters and calcium . a little bit of Ca will not hurt a rooster. however over a period of time the Ca will build up in the rooster and cause organ damage. rooster have no way of getting rid of excess Ca. hens will use the Ca for egg laying. i free choice my oyster shell. the hens eat it as they need it.

I know i use to raise cockatiels and it was exciting to see them hatch..... I can't wait til I start getting baby chicks... I am looking to add to my flock I am interested in some Ameracaunas and the olive eggers..( not sure what kind of chickens they are)........This morning I just mixed up my first batch of fermented food for my chicks... well we will see how this goes ... done a lot of research and thought i would give it a try...
