Chiques Chicks:

I'd be willing to go that far, I love the Lancaster area, but tell me this, in all truth, cause I kind of need "stealth" chickens ... are they quiet? Or can you recommend a breed that are virtually silent? Little clucks here and there would be ok, but that whole egg song thing .. Yikes! As you might be able to tell these would be my very first chickens ever.

Honestly, I can't say any chickens I've met are silent. I have roos, so they are loud, the hens, generally quiet, but they all sing the egg song at times, or when disturbed by what they see as a predator. Overall, I think hens are pretty quiet, but if you are keeping them in an area they aren't allowed, someone will hear them sometime. Definitely quiter than the dogs up the road! I'm in a farm area, so it isn't something I really notice. Cows, tractors, trucks, wild critters, the quiet country isn't really quiet!
Mine are not buffs, they are a cross between a lemon and a blue and black. Colorful, but not show birds.
Maybe someone else knows of a totally quiet chicken, I've never met one.

I've never seen or NOT heard a quiet chicken. Jethro, if you can't get a permit and live close to neighbors that won't mind you getting them, don't do it. It will just cause you heartache, frustration and a feud with your neighbors and township. Try to get a variance to the ordinance first. You're going to get caught.

No such thing as a quiet chicken breed. Individual chickens can be quiet in general, but5 something will eventually set them off regardless of how quiet they are most of the time. If you are trying to hide illegal chickens, someone will eventually hear, see or smell them.
I agree the only ones your hurting is the birds as they will eventually have to be uprooted and sold to someone else if you can't have them. My hens are alot of times louder than my cockerels. Especially their warning alarm when all of them get to cackling it is almost ear peircing.

My koi pond is on the other side of my dog run. They share the same fense.I love my rottweilers! Super sweet lap dogs that are super protective of the family. I don't see the raccoons during the day so I don't think they have rabies. So far this year we had frogs, snakes and a snapping turtle eating our koi. Now the raccoons. I hate loosing my koi. They are so pretty. I am glad they are at that end of my yard and not bothering my chickens! My cat smelt the area where the raccoons were coming up the hill and growled, she didn't lkke them there at all. I am relieved its not a bear or mountain lion.
That's always a plus, although if you ask the PAGC there are no Mt. Lions in PA! At least that's what I was told when I called to report one I saw near the I 80- I 81 interchange...I'm not going to comment further than "Government

Well I spoke to Seth. Since he hurt his back while overseas he could be on med hold over for another 6 wks, but it will more likely be less. Good news is they'll try to move him to a base closer to home for his treatment, and he can get passes to come home, so we can't complain too much. It's much better to do it this way anyway. We're sure he get's the treatment, there's more support, and there's far less risk of him falling through the cracks between the Army and the VA, like after his last deployment.

Bugger about the coons, hope you can get them!! Something keeps getting around my traps, moving them slightly but not going in - it is irritating as all get up checking it in the mornings to find nothing grrrrrr

that is cute I like that!!! Mine are pretty stealthy but then again they are young, once they get older the egg song starts!!

Sooooooooooo ..... I picked up my new arrivals today

Not a super great pic, had to use my phone as I couldn't be bothered going inside to get the SD card for the camera lol I'll try and get a good one later on after mr 4yr old goes to bed.

They are both pretty quiet, apart from the occasional loud cluck - which is SOOOOOOO odd to hear compared to my other lot lol They are pretty skittish, which is understandable. I probably would be too if a 6yr old picked me up and carried me halfway across a yard by my legs to be put in a cardboard box and driven to a totally different location lol

For now they are in the garage under quarantine - hopefully I will get to see some eggs sooner rather than later!!! Still trying to come up with names for the 2 of them!

No not illegal but don't want to disturb neighbors who are kind of close in proximity but I'm only considering a max of 3 hens so hopefully not too noisy
