Anyone have any tips on keeping the flies away? Been having issues with them I n the coop :/

I have no idea if it works, but I was told a few times it does. Put water in a clear plastic bag (gallon or so) with a few pennies in it and hang it up in your stall/coop/ barn/shed. I was told bugs think it's a nest of a large, bug eating bug.

If you try it, let us know if it works.

If you want herbs try basil, bay leaves, or tansy. But I am not sure how safe they are for the chicken so if you do I'd place the herb in a satchel so they can't eat it.
Another option is this http://www.wikihow.com/Make-Natural-Outdoor-Fly-Repellent-with-Essential-Oils. I used a mason jar instead of the tin, a sponge from dollar tree and the lemon grass oil. It's worked fairly well in the house. Again I'd place it in something that the chickens can not get into.
Fly tape or traps are an option too, they have the traps at TSC and online. You can also make one from a two liter bottle.

Hmm I never heard that one before. I may give that a try, thanks!

Anyone near Media?  Looking for some hatching eggs that are local.  We just hatched a few silkies

Sorry, I'm a bit behind on the posts, been pretty busy getting prepared for the Chester County 4H Show. I'm fairly close to Media, I will be in Media, Glen Riddle, today. I have Black Copper Marans eggs, Olive Egger eggs and Mille Fleur Bantam Cochin Eggs. What are you looking for?

Thanks for the other option! I know I need to figure out what I'm doing soon, I've seen multiple flocks of geese headin south already.
I broke down last winter and bought those electric heated water bowls. Got tired of dragging hot gallons of water down my hill to the coops.

I have a similar brand. Can't see it in the picture, but the electrical cord is connected to a flat, foil-covered plate that is tucked against to plastic bottom of the bowl. This is my plan:
I currently put my plastic waterer inside a slightly bigger plastic pan, like the kind under a flowerpot ( keeps spills to minimum, those waterers are so shallow!). I figure if I take the foil plate off the dog bowl and sandwich it directly under the waterer it will have good contact and I can keep using my regular waterer with minimal spills. I'm afraid a big open pet dish will just lead to wet, cold, mad chickens!

For Jethro,
My Jersey Giants seem very quiet compared to my other breeds, but there are only two of them so maybe it's just a personality thing. I'm curious to see if my latest pullets will sing any egg songs... Our other chickens do not at all! Maybe it's because they come inside from free-ranging to lay and are usually alone? I guess they don't want to draw attention when they are feeling vulnerable? We also have no rooster, maybe that plays into it.
