Here is a composting question:

I have begun composting by just putting out food scraps and chicken poo in a pile of composting leaves I have out back.

I am concerned I may be attracting animals that hwant those food scraps................the very animals that could also be predators for my chickens like the skunks and raccoons..........

what do you do to prevent this?

do you all make a compost box...........or not?
thanks in advance!

Got caught in the grow out pens during a storm, so I pulled out the phone and made use of the time...

if you look closely at the corner between the 2 pens you will see my butt print.....I spend way to much time in that spot,,,,i hate when people ask me why the butt of my pants are dirty....uuummmm, that's not mud.

Too funny. Glad you found use of your time. I am not able to make it to the Dragon tonight, let me know when you're going and I'll save you some eggs for that day. They are prone to broodiness ~I've only got 2 that are not brooding and laying right now.

Egg color would be similar, (not really supposed to be, but is sometimes). I have a hen at the end of her cycle laying spotted eggs, I love the look of it even thought it's not really what we're shooting for in Marans, but could pass for a Wellie egg.

I'm looking for opinions. In my flock, I have a total of 4 roosters / cockerels. I am keeping my Australorp Rooster as he is the king of the hill right now. I also have a 18 week old BCM cockerel that I am thinking I don't like his color. I also have a 16 week old BCM cockerel that I think I like how he is developing. Last, I have a 18 week old Oliver Egger cockerel. I think I will be getting rid of the 18 week old BCM and keep the 16 week old. Can you think of any reason to keep the 18 week old Olive Egger? I have a couple Olive Egger pullets but they may be siblings, I'm not sure though. Thoughts?

Pix would help, but it really all depends on what you are wanting to breed. If you just want rainbow birds & a colorful egg basket then keep the olive egger as he can throw several different egg genes for the next generation. If you are wanting to breed BCM then keep the best specimen. I always keep at least 1 back-up roo. Never know when something will hapen to your favorite roo.

Bwahahahahahahaha! I got that question 1 day after falling in the goose pen & having to run to my son's class to check on the eggs hatching in the bator & didn't have time to change 1st. Leave it to kindergardeners to need to know why your butt is all dirty.

I don't have plans to show them but I do want to sell chicks so I want a nice looking roo. Based on the standards, I know which BCM roo I want to keep. I don't have the space or tolerance for 4 roo's. I'm considering 3 now because I do like the colorful egg basket. One of my EE's laid her first egg today so I'm all about adding mor color! Do you think the OE mixed with BCM or EE would make for cool eggs or will I really be just wasting feed on him?
