Sounds like a cat, mink, or weasel. I don't know about a regional map or list, but the PAGC has a decent list of predators, and tracks. Although there are some predators they do not list, as they do not officially recognize the animal as a native with sustainable populations. Did you check under the Predators and Pests forum?
 
Getting Gavin on the bus was like pulling teeth, since our mallard momma decided to go broody today. He was super excited, until I told him it'll be about a month until they hatch. To get his butt in gear I told him that the more he's at school the faster the days will go by, plus they will hatch around fair week, so he'll be home for a week when they hatch or shortly after they've hatched. With all his excitement I hope at least one hatches.
Had another pleasant surprise when I got back from taking him to the bus, two eggs already. Usually the girls don't start laying until after 10.

Sounds like a cat to me also. What part of PA are you?
 
So I am thinking bout getting a pair of Buff Orpington hens in the spring. Any advice or ideas where I can find just 2 in the western pa, Pittsburgh area? Not sure if my local farm store will carry them.

Yes they do...my pair are great and friendly as can be....this time of year may be a bit more challenging, but all the hatcheries have orps of some sort in the spring....mypetchickens,com would be my goto for small quanties....my two cents....

Thanks Blarney, thanks Stake. I'll check out both places! I figure spring will be better I hate to think of putting two new girls out in the coop after the brooder in cold weather and without friends in the flock yet!

I have a confession........I'm not as fond of my White Rocks and Leghorns as I am my "cuter" birds. I love that they do or will give me great eggs but they aren't as sweet as the Silkies or as playful as the other ones. Okay, now I feel better :) That being said I was out taking some pictures of the new chicks and decided to get a few of the other birds free ranging. I let them all out ALL day today. I was nervous for Pee Wee (Serama) and Thunderbolt & Daisy (Easter Eggers) but they did great!

I'm scared Pee Wee is a rooster.......

They are always together! Love it!





I know I asked before but no one replied. Breed guesses on the black and white rooster? Egg that he hatched from was listed as Cochin mix.

They are so cute together!!!

Awh soooo cute!! Glad everyone is OK, love seeing chick pictures- it reminds me of spring.

Also, as far as Silkies go, do you guys house them in with your 'regular' chickens, or do they require different housing?
 
Ah... a house without kids. I love it. I hate getting up with the kids in the morning and I hate the calls about Devon being bad, but I love not having them here. Thank goodness for school.
 
Anyone know where I can get about 3 standard brahma chicks -- females only please (and breed and gender really needs to be reliable). They don't have to be day old, a couple weeks is fine, but I'd like to be able to socialize them, so maybe not too old. Not real picky about color here but one of each color would be nice.
