Stake- did you add the hot liquid AND water bath for 10 mins? in her instructions: you put raw into jar then put hot-liquid on top, then seal-done...kinda confused, doesn't take much

how are your peppers after..are they soft? I read a little of the comments... peppers got very soft on some, but not all ...i guess it doesn't really matter...was just curious...

I got Nettie to eat weeds and for the milk. I wanted to try my hand at making cheese and butter. Maybe a little soap, too. I've had her a year and she's never gone into heat and without breeding her I can't get milk.

Yeah, chickens gobble to fast and it gets caught or goes down the wrong way. They'd have you believe they were dying of starvation when they do that. Pfft. Mine get fed daily and they act like they haven't eaten in weeks. No one said they were smart (bird brains).
Goat milk soap??? That sounds awesome!

Okay, that is a relief- I was really worried because I have had experience with chicken illness related to sneezing, unfortunately.

Mine used to do this really bad with dry food, especially mash. They dive in too fast & get the dust up their nose & it gives them the sneezes. I've had much less of this since switching to fermented feed.

That is exactly what I am feeding them. Can you ferment food in the winter? Is it just slower? I keep wanting to switch to it but I have to find a good place to keep the food.

have you checked out the "poop chart"? ..

^ that thing is a lifesaver.

sorry to be hogin' the thread..good grief!..anyway, ahaha ***Stake- if I got a "surprise" box like that, I would be sleeping in the coop with them...hahaha-seriously..there were DUCKS in that box!!! hahaha....I think a little more than needed, but prices are good! We would only be looking to get a like..half dozen or so... will probably just pick chicks from the animal store, something like that...
I love the names they used for the 'packages'..hungry man???? skillet special?? hahhaha OMG...hahahha

Purdy:

Did raw veggies....boiled the brine, poured then in the bath for 10mins...will need a couple of weeks to test....

Have never pickled/canned peppers...want to try to do those "Italian" ones in the oil..

Canning (or even just jarring without processing) peppers, garlic or herbs in oil provides the perfect environment for botulism to grow. If you want marinated peppers in oil, just make enough that you can store in the fridge.

Hello everyone! I've been such a bad poster lately. My Ipad won't let me quote but I did catch up on my reading :)

The hubby said he thinks getting a goat will be a good idea (never, ever thought he would give in so easily). He wants to build a portable housing system so we can clear some land. Any thoughts on this? I really want a Pygmy goat. Is it true goats are social animals and you should at least have 2? What else do they eat?

We have been setting the trap every night but most nights the food is gone, the trap is moved but it's empty. We finally got a trail cam so fingers crossed we see what is getting in and out!

Still no eggs from our white rocks. I swear if we don't get some soon I'm going to eat them!

Since money is going to be tight soon I'm going to cancel our cable. I already clip coupons but I would love to cut down even more on our grocery bill. Any suggestions? I cook every night, make as much from scratch as possible, make my own cleaners, etc. I just can't seem to get it under $150-200 a week :/

Sorry so many questions! Have a great night.

Hey MyPeeps, 1 goat alone can be very lonely and cry a lot. Our goats have done an excellent time clearing and ideally would be in portable fencing and clear small areas at a time. We have 2 goats that would stay in the solar powered, portable, electric fencing but the 3rd would not stay put. We now have 4 foot no climb, permanent fencing that keeps them in. Goats are browsers not grazers, they do a better job clearing brush than mowing grass.

I'm looking forward to your trail cam pics.

I've brought our grocery bill down by buying in bulk. They opened a Costco near me and I do most of our grocery shopping there, the down side is the up front cost and the limited selection.
