Figs grow here in PA? I always assumed they were a warmer climate tree. How far north can they grow?
I saw a show once where these people in Canada have fig trees, they actually bury the whole tree through the winter. They cut the roots on the North and South sides of the tree, then tip the whole tree into a ditch on the South side, and cover it up with soil and then leaves, in the spring, the dig it up again. They have a 'fig festival' at the end of the summer. Pretty unbelievable.

Chiqueschicks, cool that your nephew has had figs for so long, I haven't even had one yet. Ever. never tasted a fig, so this could be a good thing for me. I only planted the tree to see if I could get it to grow, in our zone. It worked, but not as well as I would have liked.

Quote: DH's theory is, now that the leaves are dropping the hawks can see the birds better and so they hang around.

Yeah, I was thinking that too, but I have been seeing them everywhere, not just by my house.

I set my sweatshirt on the fence, when I came to retrieve it, it already had an inhabitant…..blech!

I would burn that sweater!
But pretty pretty egg, what laid it?

Beautiful eggs! Last week I got wonderful eggs from Roseschicks and yesterday I had the last one. I They were like a beautiful box of chocolates! Now they're gone! :hit Anybody in Bucks / Montgomery counties willing to sell me their extras? Please! :D Stake, those babies are so cute, and l love the "stink eye"! I bought a dwarf fig tree this year, from either Gurney's or Spring Hill Nursery (same company I think). It is only about a foot and a half tall, I've kept it in a container and I have decided to overwinter it indoors in a sunny south facing window. Something tells me it'll be a few years until I see figs, but it's all a journey! I had also picked up 3 kiwi plants/vines at Lowes this summer (clearance rack, $1.00 a plant because the leaves had fallen off; watered them, they came right back. Score! :celebrate. ) I have them in my raised garden beds over the winter until I decide their permanent location. If you do get hardy kiwis, know that you need a female and a male for pollination. Transplanted some currant bushes from a relatives place, hoping they will come back in the spring! :fl

My nephew actually only had them for a year. Previous property owners were Greek. They do wrap them in plastic for protection over the winter. The previous property owners told them how to care for them. They also need pruned so they don't get too big, not sure when that is done.

The spotted egg in the middle was laid by an Olive Egger, There's a black copper Marans egg at the bottom, an EE top right and a Wyandotte top left. I bought the fig tree at about 2 feet tall in Fall, 2010 over wintered it in my garage, only watered when it was really dry. We got plenty of figs last year, but didn't pick them before frost killed them.

Chick watch has begun. My broody's babies were due yesterday but since it has been a bit chilly they are delayed. She is in the main coop so I will move her & the babies once hatch is done.

Silkie:

Tic toc, Tic toc.....whats going to hatch?, Do you think I should bring my two week olds inside? They seem to be doing well with mama and she stops to warm them up a couple of times a day...

I would go with the 'Mama knows best' approach. As long as she can cover the babies they should be fine. Just make sure they have a snug nest to settle into when she wants. Our silkie raised 8 chicks last winter in temps that never went over 35.

I'm getting ready to go pick up some silkie chicks, they are a couple days old! This is a new adventure for me!
