Silkie, I hear ya on the pea combs. I'm really liking my Wyandotte girls, they are laying for me even in this cold and dark, perhaps I should focus more on Wyandottes and not so much on all my single combed varieties….hmmmmm

Here's my poor BCMs boy. I noticed this morning that his comb had poo all over it! My OE girl is roosting in the rafters of the run for some reason (in the day) so I guess she was the culprit. Anyway, had to catch him in the muddy run ~no small feat. I was chasing him in circles around the coop, my best girlies were staying at my feet (maybe some treats would magically come falling out of me?), eventually he hid from me in the coop, Thank Gawd! He was easy to corner in there.

I slathered him in Balmex as I read somewhere it was better than Vaseline for this…don't know if it's true or not, but what the heck.

I think the girls are 'into' it.
He's so handsome! Hopefully the son I have off of him turns out just as handsome!

I have lucked out pretty much during the winter with my chickens as far as frost bite..Had one chicken that ended up with an eye infection . was really bad .. I kept her in house for 2 weeks and babied her and gave her tetramyacin...(SP?) it did the Job now she is out with the gang doing well.. i live in the western area of Pa. by Pittsburgh.. an I am entertaining the Idea of setting eggs this spring with a broody just wondering if there was anyone close to this area that would have Fertile Americana eggs that i could buy off them to set.......I am really happy with the eggs I'm getting this winter up to 19 eggs a day from 22 hens not bad at all ...

Well I am getting a splash Marans rooster. WTH, my as well get some of those too!

Blarney your rooster is so cute with his white tips, I like desitin. Its much thicker then balmex, I can also recommend udder butter. That works good too. To aid in healing you can use A & D ointment.
