Heather, I wish you came, it is by far the largest show I've ever participated in. Lots to see and learn and the birds are gorgeous! My son won BB for his Marans pullet. Super exciting. I didn't see Arielle, but I did talk to some turkey people as my son wants to try raising them.
Glad you are having a good time Blarney! Tell your son we said "Congrats!!"

I love it and I think it's perfect.
Agree! Very cute hat!

Hi I am looking to get 3 Narragasant turkey chicks to be delivered around the beginning of april.
Is there any body that would ship just 3 of these?
Most of the hatcherys want you to buy a mimun of like 10 to 20.
I figgured that my land can only safely support about 3, and I would like to get a heritage turkeys like the Narragasants.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Dennis

I'm curious, why did you pick Narragansett? We spent the day looking at turkeys and comparing the different breeds, I thought the Narragansetts were beautiful, but my son is leaning toward the Bourbon Reds, which I hear are delicious.

Spring spring spring................dreaming of spring!

So I have ordered chicks for mid March! and just today

I ordered a whole bunch of non GMO seeds too!

I am so ready for spring and its only Mid January!

At least some seeds can be started indoors in maybe a months time.............

and it is easy to order stuff........but then comes the hard work of building the new coop and the new square foot gardening raised beds!

I am however mentally quite looking forward to all this..........

We will see what my body and mind will feel like when I trying to do the carpentry and digging work on the weekends!

For now-----at least there is stuff to look forward too!

just thought I would share my looking forward to SPRING!

How early do you all start your seeds?????
I just downloaded two apps for my phone yesterday. I was happily going through the one app, and seeing when to plant what (earlier than I thought this year!) when the dog needed out, and I saw the snow.

I circled the garden fence today, and began making plans for either replacing the too short/crooked stakes, or moving the whole thing over a few feet. The second chicken run starts about three feet to the left, and fifteen feet back. I may just garden in the other run, while they work on the grass that is still in the garden (new garden). I am sure they wouldn't mind the grass!

Does anyone think the chicken run has too much fertilizer for planting? I am still trying to understand that kind of stuff. Along with the poo, there is sand, pine bedding, and leaves. Hey, a lot happens in two years.

Oh, and Lisa, the apps say that a lot of the seeds should be started in early February.

A lot of us want turkeys this year. I am pretty sure we will let others know what/when we are getting our poults so others can get some too.

Quote: From what I have seen (catalogs) the Narragansett are the best mothers, and are still on the conservation list as critical. I may try them next year. I know, you are not asking me. Just mentioning my thoughts.

I have been researching which heritage type of turkey that would be best for my future needs, and the Narragansett seems to have many things that I am looking for. I have been told that the hens are excellent mothers, and they have a deep natural instinct for laying and also hatching thier own chicks. (no incubator needed). Also I have read somewhere that this breed has one of the best immune systems and are pretty hardy.
I have located a source almost in my back yard. On monday I will be picking up his last 2 Narragansetts. But he does have quite a few other breeds of turkeys and chickens, so he is a poultry breeder.
I will pass on his info if anyone who lives close to the Lebanon, Pa area.
His name is Kevin Harnish and his phone # is 717- 821-7848
He has Slates,Red Bourbons, and I think he said Spanish Blacks. He also has a vast amount of chicken breeds.
He will sell direct to you right off the farm.

Things are coming along, this is where we left off on Friday.

Framing things out for the hen boxes, and roof on..

This side is pretty much done, two windows up top, and lids for the hen boxes. Still need some work inside, and gota finish the sides and the doors. Then once weather breaks, going to outside.

Hi all you wise & wonderful keepers of the birds.....I have been noticing for the past week or 2 that I am getting eggs that are a tad oddly shaped, shell is rough to the touch & the color is much paler than I usually see. I just have the 2 Buff Orpingtons that are laying right now but I'm not sure which on is laying that egg. Is this something I should be concerned about? The cracked eggs look good inside & taste as delicious as the nice brown ones I had been getting prior. We just introduced 2 new members to our 2 resident Orpies and they seem to be integrating pretty well but I was wondering if stress could cause it. This seems to have started a little after the time the new birds came. Thanks.

Well I came home Thursday to see that my chick's have outgrown there tote and were walkind around, so they have been moved inside a dog crate....some pics of them flying the coup

So I have hired security personal to stand guard and make sure they are staying put.

Also switched their water to nipples and glad they picked up on it so quick, will be putting system like this in my coup.

I have a trio of Narragansetts but they are not currently laying. As soon as they are laying eggs will be available forsale and I plan on hatching a few poults to sell as well. along with my buckeyes and salmon faverolles.
