Stumpy update:
Starting to look like Miss Stumpy is MISTER Stumpy. He is doing well & getting around the brooder fine. He's still getting vit/elec & antibiotics to bost recovery.

I just love the name Mr. Stumpy! So funny!

What's the difference between 4 and 5 hens? Not much, I figure. We eat a good amount of eggs and I'm wonder if 4 hens won't lay enough consistently for us. Should I add a Leghorn to our order?

Uh, oh... .chicken math already starting!
Yes... if you are only able to have 5 total then add to the order now so they grow up as a group instead of adding one later.... but....
I would say if you will be less limited on the number of chickens you can have I would wait till you see how the personalities develop so you can either get a second (or third) one of your favorites or even a new one that catches your eye as you get more involved in the chicken world!

If you look at the top pic you can see where the name came from. This is my chick that lost it's feet to frostbite.

As for 4-5 chicks, ummm, you're asking the wrong person. I've NEVER had that few. My very first batch was 6 chicks, 4 ducks. Within 2 weeks that turned to 20+ birds...lmao
 
I'm such an excited chicken momma......last night hubby checked in on the girls before our bedtime & he said all 4 of them were on the roosting bar together, not exactly touching but very close together. So it looks like the older 2 are beginning to accept the 2 new ones better than I thought. It's been less than a month since we got the 2 new ones.

I did discover some very small white spots on the tips of of one of my Buff Orpies, is that frostbite? I attempted to put vaseline on the 2 Orpies but it was so cold it was almost impossible to spread it around. I did the best I could though. I'm hoping all will be well till this weekend & I'll bring them in the house to put it on then take them back outside quick as I can. If it is frostbite, do I need to do anything more for her? Since I'm new at this all & have some questions...will her comb fall off? I didn't try to put vaseline on the 2 new ones as I read somewhere that a rose & pea comb don't need it....is that right? The new ones are so hard to catch...lol

I saw that, the poor thing. At least he has a good caretaker to love on him. I just love the name!

Okay, I think I'm going to add the extra leghorn. ;)

My sick chook is failing...suspect the ultimate cause was being egg bound...tried a bunch of meds and got her to start eating for a day or so, but, she crashed yesterday....I forced a bit of water and moved her close to the space heater....her buddy is hanging with her....and its just a matter of waiting....really sucks....

Give her a warm soak, dry her good & then use a syringe to inject veggie oil into her vent. If there's an egg stuck that may help her move it.
