Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Hey all:

After looking at the long term forecast, we still have a very long stretch of extremely cold weather....I have been giving the chooks who are snowed in to the coop double feed supplies to keep up with their energy needs...

In general, I think chooks are pretty tough...but, a couple of weeks of wind chills near 0 is a lot to ask from a non arctic bird (by the way a pair or arctic owls have been hanging around Barnegate bay)....so, I am looking for Ideas...

I am definitely going to hang a suet feeder in the coop and set them up with a brick a day....
Didn't want to, but I may add a heat lamp....(creates a world of other problems)
Given that the snow will not melt, I will be tossing a couple of apples a day in the coop to keep them per-occupied..(I will core them first)
Was thinking about giving the chooks some jello, I have alot of this sitting on the shelf (any downside?)

Your thoughts welcomed.....

There's always room for Jello!

I couldn't help myself.....:p

Wing can not go to the auction for Ray, I am on the same shift lately, even worse...most of my days are 3 to 3..

but if any one has meat rabbits I would also be interested.....I am looking for silver fox rabbit, or there's another breed that I like....I think they are called american whites?

You could always send hubby, he never comes home with any surprise, ROFL.
I think there is an American breeder in York county, but they may be blues.
You can always go to the rabbit show that wouldn't be dangerous.

Some days I'm just so funny, LOL.

Quote: nope, nope, nope, hubby is not allowed to go animal shopping......we have very different views on animals......he will always have that production farm boy upbringing were everything belongs in a small cage and you pack as much into the space as possible..

which is why I want the breeds of rabbit that I do,,, they are better suited for a colony type breeding program........he would just bring any old rabbit that he could get cheaply....

Ray,,, not sure if you are only looking for certain breeds of rabbit or not.....I can get dutch rabbits on a regular basis if you are interested in them.

Are you FREAKIN kiddin me with this weather?!!! Every time it snows I put up some more tarps, and every time I put up more tarps the wind comes from a different direction, ARRRRGH! As yet, I have not managed to keep even ONE run dry. This is driving me crazy.

I hope this frustration turns into productivity when coop and run building time comes around again.
