I ordered chicks from Pickering Valley Feed in Exton...............

Where do they get them from?

With all the discussion in this group about certified hatcheries and testing etc................I wonder the source of my day old chicks?

I understand they have at least one vaccination-----I think for Mareks...........but am not certain.............

I am feeling a bit uninformed..........or perhaps have not looked into this enough...............such a newbie!

what would you all rec I do?

I have 4 birds now and have 5 assorted day old chicks pre-ordered for March 10th roughly.

should I ask a bunch more questions of Pickering Valley?
what about medicated vs non medicated chick feed.............I was reading on this...........and its just not yet clear in my mind...........depends on what vaccine they have rec'vd I think.
lisa i sent you a pm

Glad I'm not outside working tonight! Was cold enough just being out to give the birds their evening snack and tuck them in! And of course our broody decided this week to go back to the roost without her 3 youngsters (who are feathered at 7 weeks, but are lightweight silkie mixes) so we set up a protected area with a lizard heater (100w ceramic heat coil) to keep them warm. They will work their way onto the roost with the other birds in a few days, no doubt.... but in the meantime I feel better knowing they have a safe and (reasonably) warmer spot to rest.

Lisa:

I believe they are Ideal chicks...there's a poster on the door next to where they keep the chicks...When I got mine, I talked with their chicken guy 'Randy'...he suggested using medicated feed for at least the first week as the day olds don't have developed immune systems...I just kept them on medicated til the first bag was finished...

I believe Pickering gets their birds from Ideal in Texas. I use medicated feed for chicks, but not everyone does.

Just got back from the ER, 3rd time there in as many weeks. First my Mom, then DH, tonight was my Mom again, she keeps falling. Everyone's good. I really hope I don't get the flu, ERs have the tendency to be filled with sick people. Go figure.

Sorry to hear about the ER trips... never something you want to do for your evening. I hope the problems are all improving... though it sounds like your Mom may need more help (physical therapy or occupational therapy may help improve her strength and balance to reduce fall frequency, and she may benefit from the therapist's evaluation of the cause of the falls). Many folks just assume they will loose balance and such with age, which is true to an extent, but there may be exercises or alternate methods to do things that may help her make the most of her abilities. I don't mean to be an internet doctor or a 'butt-in-ski' when I am not involved at all, but a lot of folks associate therapy with recovery from an injury but I view it also as a way to prevent injury.... if not already involved in therapy her doctor may be able to arrange an evaluation if she is interested.

Unfortunately for me there is no therapy for 'klutzy'!

Fisher:

Being a fellow boater, I've found using a wobble board helps with balance though I don't think I'd want my mother using one....really help when the boat is rocking....my two cents....

That's me too fisherlady! Went out to feed this morning in our lovely -9°F to find my rubber water pans frozen so solid I literally had to jump up & down on them to get enough ice out to add hot water. This old fat woman doesn't walk well, let alone jump. Nearly gave myself 2 black eyes when I forgot to fold my arm across my chest first.
