Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

So I have started to list and relist and plan about my spring building project of building my version of Sally's Hinkel Haus!

I like the design because of the use of pallets for framing that saves some expense -----I am having some design questions

1. I like to have many access points to reach in and clean from different angles etc...........but if I cut thru the pallet walls I will be cutting down my framing.

There will be a big main door for cleaning etc and a smaller door for the hens in/ out...........and windows..............but a large hinged additional door seems like
I would be better off not using a pallet wall .

I wonder if I explained this well enough.

2. roof over a run.

Well this winter sure was / still is a handful with snow and rain and ice.
This is my first year with chickens and I did it all myself and my blue tarp and picnic tarp were ok yet really insufficient if I am being honest.

I am thinking about extending the roof of the coop so that I will have small sturdy roof overhang.................its just been my experience that snow and rain seem to come in sideways and all.......so then it means plastic wrapping the run walls...........etc.................or boarding up some sides...................

I really don't have a good plan here.

I don't want to build a run with a roof where I can stand in it because it would be so big and visible...............yet I do need to stand in the run to clean out----I rake etc
and I need a more sturdy roof?

any ideas?

a hinged roof so that its low and then I flip it up to rake etc?

these building projects for the detail oriented person and non builder really get me thinking ............!!!

It been my experience that some stuff just wants warmer temps to germinate....don't know about basil though....and deer and rabbits are only 1/2 of it, shat about dogs and chooks???

Acutally her family had both back on the island. Her father used to work in a hatchery when he first arrived in the states.

What you can do for the front is frame it instead with cheap lumber, leave a center post and have two huge doors almost the size of the front. but make them so in the winter you dont have too open too much up to feed and water.

Runs I am not help with....

I DO suggest one thing when designing ANY chicken area.....

MAKE THE FRONT ACCESSIBLE TO HUMANS ONLY!!!
that means you put the wire up for the run to the sides or just the back.
NEVER EVER enclose your coop within the run, you will be walking in mud and poop for life. And every single egg run you do will be BOOTS ON and BOOTS OFF, and your lucky if you come out alive!

We made that mistake with one of the brahma pens. plus its great to not have to open a single gate in winter like in this mess this year. the doors are well above ground and you can access everything inside the coop from the front.

good luck!

I TOTALLY agree about the having a humans only access................I did this by luck, I imagine, on this coop..........plus my coop is small etc........and I am grateful. I also have had the coop very close to my house so with all this snow and ice etc..........it was a short distance to do the basic food, water, open door etc.

shoveling snow to a coop is above and beyond shoveling the walk and driveway and sidewalk.............which are often too much!

I think I was spoiled with such an accessible current little coop. For not knowing what I was doing because it was my first ever..........AND building it myself as a non carpenter.........AND using an old dresser...............Well I did a great job!

Plus my hens are quite happy in the coop and it would last for longer ..........its just I am getting more chicks. So by the fall I would like to combine my new pullets with the current group in a bigger coop.

the dresser has nice features of 2 drawers , and front opening door, side opening pop door and I build a back room with window/door so there was tons of access and light and ventilation as needed.

I cant imagine just one main door for cleaning or access!

the drawers really make cleaning a cinch since the upper roost is where the poops at.........and the lower nest box is nice and tidy.............each with its own drawer!

I may build a sliding poop board into the bigger coop for under the roost and so that its easily removed . If the under the roost is cleaned regularly-----I have found that the coop is not that bad and the whole of it needs cleaning less frequently.

Its months till my April building party and I am already obsessing! beware of future posts! or stay tuned.................
