Just sitting here reading about all of you taking about eggs and I'm getting excited though I still have a few months till I see any from mine lol.

Those TSC swap things, how do they work and when are they? I'm just thinking ahead for when I find out who all is a roo. Maybe I can trade them.

WARNING....do not go to your local TSC without the guidance of another responsible adult.
On Saturday I stopped at TSC for shavings. Of course I walked by the chicks just to look. They had the same old thing with a bin of bantam silkies marked at 50% off. Happily I left with just my bag of shavings.
Sunday was such a miserable day...rain, sleet and followed by snow. Nothing to do but hang out inside and think. Forward to today. I have the day off and needed to go to the store. Of course TSC was on the way so I decided to stop just to look (ok, so I'm lying) the bin of silkies were still there at 50% off. I did a quick head count and guesstimated 30+. I found the sales clerk, luckily the one working was one of the nicer ones at this store. I offered her 50 cents a piece for the silkies and that I would take them all

It took her about 3 seconds to say ok. I left there with 38 silkies and one clean/yellow leg chick.
Now yes I do have a plan and lets just say that their loss is my gain

So, it is possible to barter at a chain store.

People's lack of exposure to reality is actually sort of sad... it is amazing how far people are disconnected from food... their only understanding of it is what they read on the label at a store.
It is amazing how many times I have had to explain that different breeds can lay different colors...and even that there are different breeds of chickens! And we live in a relatively rural area of farming country!

Great score! But.... what in the heck are you going to do with 30+ broody machines? LOL

and by the way, my lunch today is quite tasty and cheap

a piece of round steak that I got on yellow tag yesterday for $1.25, and a couple of dippy eggs......yummy....

never get tired of eating eggs

Miserable hatch, under 50%. Weather was bad when I gathered, that cold first week in March. Certain days did better than others, I had dated them.
Light ones are silkie mix, I can't keep her out of the pen. 5 darker are SFH.
See what happens with the next batch.

Sorry the hatch rates weren't what you hoped for...but the ones you did get are really cute!!
... the cold weather played havoc with egg viability for us also. Our broody hatch rates were much lower than normal on the breeder eggs we got and most never even started, so either infertile or too cold for too long before being collected. The barnyard mixes of our own, which were collected while still warm, hatched at 85%.
