Started work on a new pen. Adding a 12 x 9 pen for meat birds.

Also thinking about separating my ducks and chickens. I think my one drake snuck up on a chicken at the big water trough and pushed her in, and then raped/drowned her.

Sorry to hear....I've seen wild ducks chasing a female...they're pretty aggressive...

Hello all,

We just moved into York County, PA so I wanted to get on to say hello.  but also a couple nights ago we had an attack and lost 8 of our 10 light Brahma's.  We were hoping to replace them but would like to take a try at hatching some, so if anyone has some light Brahma hatching eggs within an hour(two if you would be willing to meet half way, I would be interested.  or if you would ship them that would be great as well.  any help is appreciated, thank you.

After pulling the latest chicks from the incubator, I now have a total of 54 chicks hatched this week!
2 - Silkies
8 - Bredas
7 - New Hampshires
10 - Black/Blue Copper Marans
7 - Welsummers
20 - Mixed breeds

Is this too many? Am I out of control? Will I stop? (NO to the last one, if not the first 2)

YAY! Congrats that may be me one day lol. As of now, I'm lucky my husband didn't kill me for getting 17 lol (yes, he found out before coming home lol)

Welcome from Chester Co...really sorry to hear you lost so many birds...do you know what got you?...,most likely with a successful attack the predator will be back...don't know who has what breeds, but there are many hatching eggs close to you...

Mixed breeds - when it comes to sheer cuteness, I think these might win the prize. I know they are "mutts", but they hatched 100% and got out of the egg earlier than the purebreds. I think the ones with chipmunk down are probably the olive eggers (easter eggers with a Welsummer roo).

I've found a new tool in roo management....a tennis ball...have been getting one of my girls re-integrated back into the flock, but main roo has a bad attitude..(he's great on all other levels)...so I have been supervising her outings....I don't mean you need to knock him off his feet, but, it stops aggression without me having to step in....my two cents

Not exactly sure.... we saw a stray dog walk through the yard a couple days earlier. There are feathers all over the yard so I think that was probably it. We have since secured them and will hopefully not have any more problems.

When can you take them off the heat lamp?
How much space to they need?
Do you need a roost or do they sleep on the ground?

My meaties were off heat by 2-3 weeks inside the garage as long as temps stayed above 50F. Off completely by 4 weeks regardless of temps. I have them in groups of 9-10 for warmth.
The more space you give them the less often it has to be cleaned & the more exercise they get, which helps strengthen their legs.
They do not need a roost, but if you choose to give them 1 make sure it is very low (4-6 inches off the ground) & extremely sturdy (you would have to stand on it to break it) & as wide as possible to help reduce pressure points on the feet that can lead to bumblefoot very quickly due to their weight.
Ferment feed for highest weight conversion, least mess & less smell from poop.
