Do they need a well protected spot or does a far off corner off the field work,,,I think he s also afraid of getting stung and having them go nuts with the noise of tractors.... he was them away n the garden, while try to attract them to the garden area.

Well the little serama hatched at 5 AM, and then just woke up and a light brahma was hatching. It seems to have a little bit of yolk to absorb still. Does this look okay to you guys?

ohhhh goody!!! They aren't ready yet, I want to make sure they are good to go for transplanting. I will be down over the next couple months..(dumb doctors..) anyway, there is one here with YOUR name on it!!! We will have to meet at Green Dragon this FRiday!!!e ....so cool!! We always some of that awesome ice cream there..oh man, I forgot the name, they have like 3-stands there...and 'dip' mix...hahaha......As far as the plants go...I will make sure I let you know the next time we are down..promise!

We have our backyard hive next to our house, a butterfly bush next to it, we have another hive with limited vegetation around it, our hives next to a field are set back into the edge of woods. A bit of shelter to me is better for. Wind. But ask 10 bee keepers and you will get 11 different answers

How late do all of you state there ? Would really like to go but it would be towards the end of the auction and that is 45 minute drive

They don't like our lawn mower or weed thingy, but that is right up at the hive. Our kids run past the backyard one all the Time, I think if you have a few feet between you should be ok, but maybe give more leeway, I think the ones at the farm we have bees at are maybe 10-15 feet away from the alfalfa field, that is my guesstimate- I haven't been up to the hives since the fall, only my hubby has been there this spring

Are they time consuming, I have very little of that...I see All kinds of equipment, is it really needed ? Can they live with the walnut trees, nothing else seems to grow there, so it is a bare spot...
Are you available day and night for all the new bee keepers that this thread could produce?
Glad to see you made it to the thread, Chicks and Bees. Give it a couple days for more local people to turn up. Most of us pop in and out depending on how busy we are. There are folks from Grantville & Hershey here, and I'm in Halifax. Lots of folks from York county. Lets from Berks.
How many hives do you have? I've had up to 10, but didn't have any for 2 summers. Just got 2 packages again, and have 2 nucs coming soon. Do you belong to any of the local bee clubs?
You guys are killing me here.....bee's are one thing that hubby just is not thrilled about,,I tell him I only need enough for a few jars a year, OK 12 jars since I seem to buy a jar about once a month

Hehehe... We harvested about 80 pounds the last 2 years from our hive in the back- that is without feeding them and leaving them a couple of supers of honey for them for winter! (That is per year) our hive in the back is an overachiever, our other hives were so so and we lost them without harvesting.... As far as time, they seem to take more when establishing- making sure the queen is released, doing her duty. But then it seems like you check them every week and a half, but every beekeeper is different!
As far as equipment.... I like hats and gloves.... I am not fond of being stung, but in all fairness my husband plays with the bees, I take pics, sell our extra, and help with the other stuff. My husband is allergic, so he wears the gear, some bee keepers don't. We do use a smoker, it calms them when doing inspections
We have only been at this for 3 years, so, we are still learning a lot!
