Back in January, I posted some pics of the German strain of New Hampshires we had just purchased. I remember some people here expressed interest when we had some to sell. Well, we have a bunch now, they are hatching and growing well and we have both chicks and a few sexed pairs to sell. If you are interested, PM me.

I can break a broody every time by moving her to safety in the other shed and WANTING her to hatch my eggs!!! ughhhhh

I've noticed that too. Next time I'm going to proclaim loudly "this should fix your broody behavior and get you back to laying eggs!"

Think that will do the trick, or will she see though that?

Anyone in York county have any real young chicks for sale? My broody is on day 21 sitting on shipped eggs and I'm not sure they are going to hatch and I don't want her to be without chicks since she has done such a good job!

for my two cents....stay with it.....I had some eggs go 24 days in my first bater attempt....thought all had hatched that were going to and 12hours later there was more pips....

Sorry they are giving you fits... we have 5 sitting right now... and needless to say none are interested in moving to where it would be convenient for us silly humans. We did move 1 tonight, hoping it works! We are running out of nest boxes!

Can you set up a nest or box of some type in the same coop she is currently in? She may be more willing to put up with moving to a different nest if the general surroundings are the same. Even moving her into a corner, or even an 'end of the row' box may allow you to create a partition to prevent other hens from laying in her box.
We are on broody #11 since our first hatched on Feb 14th and we are ready for a break from them! I think broody hens are the coolest thing in the world, but summer is here and will be nice to not have to worry about broody hormones for a month or two at least!

I'm definitely staying with it..I am just trying to make a backup plan since I really want her to have some babies!

I have that going on with my broody and her 'sister' maran.....I no longer have any idea how many eggs are under her....and since the eggs are always covered its a win-win..(I think)...since my entire flock is 1/2 crazy...its all normal to me.....for my two cents broody is a good thing....#11 is a bit much though...I may have a bunch of OE's in about a week or so...(I didn't even mark the date she went broody)

So today I had some of the chicks outside in a couple dog crates with the bottoms removed so they could forage and play. As I was watching them, the wind blew and ruffled some of Joel 's feathers and I saw red on his back. I panicked! I thought it was blood! So after I managed to catch him (for sine reason he's terrified of people) and look at his back, I realized that is just his new saddle feathers beginning to grow in :) they are a DEEP mahogany/reddish color. Right now he's just sold black with that beautiful green Sheen to his feathers. He's going to be a stunning boy I think.

Now, dumb question, when do I stop calling them chicks and start calling them chickens lol. They're almost 9 weeks old and getting pretty big!

We have been lucky enough to have broodies share baby duties after the hatch, but not lucky enough to have them share sitting duties yet. Your eggs are lucky and it should be great when they hatch and have 2 mamas to take care of them!

I adore broody hens, not much cuter than watching a mama and her chicks... and I had hoped to always be able to naturally incubate... but just wish they would stagger it a bit more! LOL... we did have 1 quit or we would be at a dirty dozen for the year so far. We had 3 who raised their chicks together, which made it incredibly easy on us for a couple of weeks, but I don't think we'll be that lucky again for a while... I just know that dealing with 5 cases of broody hormones in one coop can be a real pain!

The good news is that we managed to sell nearly every chick we advertised and a few hens we didn't! We are down to only a couple of extra birds now, but I will wait to re-advertise since we have a few more hatches in the next month. A couple of the buyers said they were particularly interested because they liked that they had been raised by broodies... hopefully the broody genetics will hold true and eventually a few will be broodies for the new owners.
