see right through it

I cant because I use the serama area for grow out too, so I dont trust other chicks growing out to be around babies, especially the HRIR and the WFBS, they seem to pick on the littles. : ( and I keep the shed door open on the serama coop it has no screen and we have a neighbors cat take his walks right in front of the door, should he see chicks they are done, its too hot to keep it closed, plus I like them getting fresh air if its not pouring cats and dogs outside

all the grow out pens are filled right now, I have two chicks that the others were picking on in the one grow out pen, I guess I could try adding them back to their group and see what happens. or slowly add a few from that pen to them, idk. lol

I have visions of a nice clean straight row of breeding pens with plenty of room for separation, but that takes money and I dont have any :( chickens are eating me out of house, I may have to sell some off because feed is nuts right now. We processed some roosters as you know, but I just dont have the heart to do hens. and of course the oldest hens are the ones the kids and I have named and welll you get the idea. I could do the younger ones but not the old ones go figure! Why do I feel so different about a hen vs a roo!!! I cant keep letting them age and live their lives out, we have about 6 freeloaders right now! But I refuse to keep doing all the feed for freeloaders, plus they seem to be the noisy bossy hens too!

If you can give her a quiet corner in the coop for while she is setting she will cooperate with a move to another area after the hatch... we have done this with a few of the broodies. Some just will not move when on eggs, but once they have chicks they don't seem to care at all. A medium sized pet carrier would work.

Quote: I dont need more serama chicks for breeders but I guess I can let her hatch some, if I do the carrier and she sets I can carry it to the garage and if she gets off I will throw them GENTLY in the bator, if I catch them soon enough. she is so tiny its really not worth letting her but I dont have many eggs anyways.

Congrats on the broody....and, that's an awful lot of cinder blocks to haul...let alone filling with soil!!!!!

Just under 100 of em. But we got them on ye olde liste o' craig, for the pricely sum of $0.50 a piece. And then we only paid for 60 of them since the gentleman who was selling them was also a scrapper who and was kind enough to haul away our old dishwasher, mower, and an old soda machine, in exchange for some blocks. I get blocks and lose junk. Win for everyone.

(And I've managed to convince the D.O. that a Cement Mixer was an acceptable purchase.)

The bed is 3 courses high, with the bottom third as fill dirt, the middle third as a mix of garden soil and compost, and the top third as "Mel's Mix", which is itself 1/3 compost 1/3 peat and 1/3 vermiculite. I've had raised beds before, but nothing this big, or this permanent. We're in it for the long haul.

Wow!! That's so awesome!! My back hurst just looking at it! I'm heading into your neck of the woods today (Media), need to meet a guy about a bird.

Wasn't too bad; we did it slowly; one bag, and one block at a time. Took 2 days of trips in the jeep just to get the blocks here. In the end though, noone got hurt and the LizardCat got new tools, so I'm calling it a win.

And I was just looking at the chicks over there at Snyder's in Aston last week. HUGE Brooder setup over there, sitting on pallet shelves. Jealousy!

Ducks too. They're cute, and I want some, but we've got too many other "Projects" to do this year, so no quackers for me.

Seeking custom incubation person
Hi,
Looking for someone who can hatch eggs for me near Ligonier Johnstown, Latrobe, Derry area.
Anyone know anyone? I have a hatch timing issue my 2 Mini Advances can't hande.
Thanks,
Karen in Ligonier

I'm pretty new to the whole chicken thing so some advice would be great. My chicks are 10 weeks old and will not go in the coop to sleep at night. They all nest down together with my two ducks under the coop. Is this normal?:idunno
