Yes. And made me feel so much better when I thought I was going to have to cull my whole flock of babies after listening to all the sensationalism.

@ KlingKlan. I'm gonna say your new girls are production reds or red sex links.

Ok, that was my guess as well. Did a little pic cross referencing of "known" red sex links and was 95% sure. Any guess as to their age? Can you even tell something like that? They seem a lttle on the small side, so I'm really hoping they're still good layers lol!

You can determine where they are in their laying ability by examining their vent, eye ring, earlobe, beak, bottoms of feet, shanks and tops of feet. They loose pigment in that order and then gain it back in the reverse order. It's a pretty good bet, as they were at auction that their egg production is down. The good news, is that usually after a molt, they will come back into lay, not as good as their first season, but some eggs.

So we went to Green Dragon tonight and got 4 chickens (even though we wanted 5 lol)... so we are official :thumbsup !!!

DH worked VERY hard on the coop & run and he just couldn't wait to have chickens who could apprerciate all his hardwork, so my mixed flock of 5 bubble was burst in a 1 minute flurry of shouted numbers :th !!! We got home after the sun had already set and daylight was fading, we took the girls from the cage and straight into the coop to explore their new home. My 10 yr old named one and the neighbor girl who tagged along named one, 2 remain nameless until tomorrow. My son named one Zero (not a clue why) and the neighbor girl named the other Miss Peckerton IV, this name has merrit though because that girl has many missing feathers from her back. At first we though it was due to fighting in the box while waiting to be auctioned... but then we got all of them out and could see that 2 of the girls had obviously had "relations" with a rooster on the farm before being put on the auction block hehehe.

Now, here's a question, ummm what breed do we have? The auctioneer simply called them Red Hens, but I know better, just not better enough to know exactly what. A little help please?!

Sorry about the picture quality.

Congratulations!

Ha! No licking and no chickens in the kitchen. Ok. Got it. Turkeys in the kitchen are ok, right?. ;)

very well said

I concur!

OMG! I must have one of those! Seriously. If you ever sell them and can ship I know someone who would order some with me in a heartbeat. That is the cutest thing I've seen in a while.

I can ship & have about 30 of the poliskies running around under 3 weeks old. I also have a few ee bantamms, rainbow babies & polbars (another project, polish x cream legbar, they have mohawks...lol) PM me for pricing. The more you take the better the deal I can make you...lol Trying to clear out as many as possible before the move next weekend.

Planted mostly seeds today, watermelon, green beans, wax beans, butternut squash, pumpkin, corn, zinnias, marigolds and also put in some pepper plants and pickling cucumber plants. I can't get over how few weeds people seem to have. Seems like no matter how hard I try to keep up....always more weeks.

I like your beans support..is that what that is?..hahaha, the wood-pole-thingy?...And I don't see weeds in your garden..what are you seeing them?!
wink.png
..if you throw enough grass clippings over them, they go away..hahahaha, If i had the size of garden you have, i don't think there would be too much mowing left to do

....
Every year in the garden is a new experience...had most of my planting frosted or washed out a couple of times....getting back in the game and hoping for warm weather....
thumbsup.gif
..had started from seed or did you have bought plants?...we had to cover twice...been good so far

Purdy:

I tried to get things in too early....and lost all my seedlings to frost except one tomato.....re-planted cucs seeds twice and washed out twice...four gnarled seedling survived....two zucs survived....beans washed out once and the second planting is just germinating...have six stunted pepper plant...and about eight of the cabbage/broc are doing ok....I bought some peps and Toms and they are doing well...and I have nine tomato seedling that look sick after trying to harden them off...lettuce and radishes are 1/2 washed out and I will be re-seeding...still need to seed the melons and lopes...and my pink pumpkin didn't germinate yet... peas are about 8" tall (thought the chooks got 1/2 the planted seeds...)

cherries and pears didn't flower this year...peaches and blueberries are looking good...blackberries are looking pretty beat up and two of my grapes are having a hard time(four other grapes doing well)

I said stick the whole thing in my mouth. As long as I keep my tongue still, I am not licking it!
Yes, turkeys can go in the kitchen... Right into the oven! Now where is that picture?

60 people in the whole country is nothing. Humans need to toughen up there immune systems.
Most live and act like Howie Mandel. Too bad it wasn't something deadly to cull the herd!

Sorry I have not figured this forum out yet. I'm not used to an endless thread with 100 different topics.
This was about the CDC warning that 60 people in the whole country have gotten salmonella from Frenching there chickens.
I should have clicked Quote instead of Reply. :sick

So it is okay if I stick the whole chick in my mouth as long as I don't french it? :caf

Has anyone else in the area had problems with pine shavings? In the winter I couldn't find them anywhere and had to go with aspen shavings which are a bit more costly, but worked alright. Today I bought Irving's pine shaving which are usually the best type, but I opened the bag and it's legit sawdust. I double checked the bag, and it does say pine shavings

There was a shortage over the winter. I was told the harsh weather in the Midwest increases demand. My local tsc couldn't get them. They do seem to have a relatively regular supply now. Fortunately I had stocked up in the fall and had enough to make it, although I only shovel out the coops evrry few months

Mike:

I usually get mine at Pickering Valley, and they've been good quality...I do have a bag from the AGway on RT202 near West Chester, but, haven't opened the bag yet....
