Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I did not ask him, he knew I wanted midget white, he figured these would be the closest he could get, hoping they are pure, and I will have to wait and see if any hatch.

I have one i hatched it about 3 wks ago and have 12 more in the incubator now, I would like to have about 12 so unless this hatch goes way better than expected (shipped eggs, handed to me turned sideways by the mail carrier) I am trying to find some other poults.

I went to the flea market and picked up some plants since some of my seeds didn't make it out of the kitchen :( I got half of my garden planted today. I am hoping tomorrow I get if finished. I did order some purple dragon carrot seeds yesterday. I hope I can grow carrots. They look pretty if I can get them growing.

Yo go girl! Today is day two of our yard sale and things have been slow. Hoping for a better turn out today! I don't want to lug three AC Units back into the house!
I think your chickens are so lucky to have found their way into your home and lovely setup. I'm sure they will start laying soon, once they get adjusted!c:D

*Lugs three A.C. Units back in the house....*
Anne, did you put the AC units it's on Craigs list too? That should bring some buyers for you.

Kling, just LOVE your set up. I hope you get some eggs. Loss of feathers on the back is most likely from breeding. They all look like they are going through a molt to me. If you're comfortable handling them, you could fan out a wing and look for new feather growth, the new feathers start at the axial which is in the center of the wing. They should have given you at least one egg, even if they stop from stress, there should have been one egg 'in the chute'.

Edited for spelling errors

I am listing them on CL right now.... We're getting Central A/C today!

We normally throw together a wish list at the beginning of the summer where each member of the family chooses a day trip. This year I was thinking of giving myself the challenge of mastering one video game that each of my children play. It goes against everything I think that summer should be about, but may give me some common ground with the kiddoes. If you can't beat em, join em!

That's an awesome attitude to take! Your kids are lucky to have you?

KlingKlan now would be the perfect time for a spring tuneup for your new hens. Every spring I dust my girls for bugs, trim their nails and worm them with Safeguard or Valbazen. Then I repeat the worming in 10 days.

Your hens are obviously molting now and probably won't be laying for about a month. So if you worm them now and repeat in 10 days, you won't miss many eggs, even after discarding eggs for 2 weeks.

Rule of thumb about treats..........treats should not make up more than 10% of a hen's diet. She will need as much protein as possible in her diet to finish her molt so she can begin laying again.

Good luck and enjoy your girls!

How do I know of they are getting enough protein? They have access to feed at all times, and they get a snack maybe once a day, like an apple or two or some leftover veggie scraps, divided among 5 chickens. They also free range most of the day in my fenced in backyard. They seem happy and healthy!

Forgot to add the pics!

I think the yellower one is mottled, and the other may be mottled. We'll se when they feather out a little.

Congrats! They're adorable!

Give him some eggs!

Some of my mom and dad's friends came over yesterday evening for a bonfire and when they saw my roo, they said "Oh my God, he's HUGE!" and I was like "That's a bantam breed! He's like 2-3 pounds. The chicks I have in the basement will be 13 pounds full grown (brahma)."

On this note, what is the largest breed of chicken available? Jersey giants? One days I'd love to have a few "big girls"

Thank you! And Jersey Giants are biggest, and brahmas are I think the second largest. Brahmas are known to be super sweet, and partridge brahma roos are soooo gorgeous.

Another reason that I am letting the broodies take over is my bad hatching...I got about 6 chicks and 4 ducks out of 2 incubators full of eggs, I only have 2 viableeggs left 1 mMuscovy and 1 hook bill, but both have internal pips, I am surprised to see the hook bill, I had a very high temp spike in that incubator.....we shall see...

Next round will be up to the broodies, only thing going into incubator will be quail

Woke up this morning and my incubator was only 77 degrees. The light bulb burned out :( Not sure how long the temp was that low. It's only day two! Fingers crossed some still hatch!

We had our big Memorial Day picnic today. The chickens were free ranging and the kids went over with watermelon to feed them. My mean rooster who has been good lately attacked my friends 5 year old son. 2 long scratches on his leg from being pecked. Poor kiddo was scared to death. I told him he can eat the first nugget when we cook him! My kids aren't happy about it bc it's the first chick we hatched in our incubator but I can't have a mean rooster attacking people.

I haven't had a good hatch all year. Last year I was running 90%, this year not even 50%.

I think a lot of people are having issues.

Hopefully they're okay! My incubator got unplugged yesterday when I cleaned the brooder and it was only 80 with wet babies inside. I picked them up and they were literally cold and sooo close to dying so I held them in my hands under the brooder lamp and shoved the egg that didn't even pip yet in my shirt to stay warm. They would have died if I was a few minutes later. The baby in the egg survived. It's currently pipped.
