Hello, everyone!

I had chickens and turkeys several years ago, but I had to re-home all of them due to my neighbors not liking my roosters. The code enforcement guy made us get rid of them.

However, I have been going through a rough time in my life. I have suffered from depression, but this time it was the worst. My husband suggested getting a few hens again, since I loved having chickens before. Besides, he said, that neighbor moved, he said.

We went to our local auction for a few weeks. I told him I wouldn't bid on anything until I saw exactly what I wanted. This past weekend, there were 3 young (7 month old) Silkie hens. I told him I would probably bid on them. So then, he goes and bids on 50 quail eggs and 6 mystery chicks that were about 5 weeks old. And I got my Silkies...

We quickly came home and threw together another coop in our shed.

So, I guess I'm back in the bird business!

The plan is to hatch the quail eggs and sell them since neither of us has any experience with quail. I guess he figured that I'd enjoy playing around with my incubator again. If any of those chicks are roosters, they have to go to freezer camp.

I believe the chicks he bought are barred rock and either black sex links, or black australorps.

Hi,
Well, I can't NPIP my flock in the Commonwealth because
the paperwork is such a nightmare.

I am so bummed I really
wanted it. Apparently there is no give with backyard flocks.

Even BYders need to follow the same rules as the large
commerical establishments. I am so sad.

If anyone local needs some eggs, you can have as many as you want as long as you bring me some egg cartons.
My customers got ticked when I didn't have eggs for a month during the winter, and all but one returned to the grocery store eggs. If this continues, I will have to go down to four chickens!

MCC:

If I had known you needed cartons, I could've given you a dozen or so when you visited....an acquaintance who bought a couple of dozen from me brought them to me when I asked her to save/return the egg cartons(I think she put the word out at her church group)......

Blarney:

Went to Parkersburg TSC today expecting to see your trio of babies strutting their stuff...the clerk thought I was nuts when I asked 'where are the goats?'.....Her name was Lorraine and was enthused at the prospect of have you babies out for a visit.....

Yay! Maple is settling in again! She was didst bathing under the coop wallet and hanging out with the girls. Even walked up to the food to eat when 4 others were there (she wouldn't do that earlier). I watched her stand her ground when Chip (OEGB roo) charged up to her. She seems like she's slipping out of this funk she was in. I even went and sat in the run for a little bit with everyone and she didn't feel the need to come running to me :) Thanks @Stake for the help :) I think forcing her to be around them and face her fear really sealed the deal on this one.

Auro:

Glade your girl made it back in the fold....I differ in my opinions though...Maple didn't make it back into the flock, the flock let her back in.....a distinction and a difference imho......great either way!!!!

either way, I'm happy to see her back in the group and getting along :)

so I built the one set of nest boxes today and got rid of the hardware cloth that was blocking the hole, right in the spot where everyone usually roosts. We'll see if they finally decide to go roost up on the actual roosts now that they don't have that screen window there anymore.

You drove to the Parkesburg TSC and did not come visit me? YOU are in big trouble, my friend! Did you at least wave from route 30 while you passed me?
