From my understanding, south and sunny as well.
 
on the mosquito thing, my understanding is that they are CO2 motivated and bug zappers don't get them....I do not know if citronella will chase them of or the smoke may affect them....I use a oil lamp to chase off the knats, they just don't like the smoke....a cigar works too....

I've have a conversation with the BYC folk over the recent Purina survey,,,,,I'd suggest dumping and refusing BYC cookies and dumiping all LSO objects from this site.....

Basil wrapped in cheesecloth repels flying insects. Adding catnip intensifies the results ... And drives the cats crazy, so more entertainment!

There is a book called Things that Bug You. It tells you natural ways to get rid of almost anything. Mice, bats, spiders .... A lot of the answers are DE.

If you want to really do bug control right, build a bat house and see if you can get a colony of bats close by. They are they world's most effective biological control of night flying insects, and they are in decline in many places, so you'd be doing good all around. This is a bit more "long term", of course.

I have a bug zapper hanging in the gazebo, we call him Frank!

Frank zaps our Australian mozzies quite well and the tray gets emptied into the pond; the resident goldfish are partial to a little bbq'd bug :)

We also thoroughly enjoy watching the gecko's hunting around Frank, Frank is gecko-friendly.

Bats? I have fruit bats I will quite happily send your way. We have colonies of the things fly over every night and you do not want that .. bat poop is on a par with sulphuric acid in slow motion! OK, it will not burn through stuff quickly but trust me, it will eventually. If a bat happens to poop on any washing on the line, throw it out; it ain't coming out in the wash! Bats can poop at some ridiculous angles and can get that poop into places you would find hard to believe. Won't even bother to mention all the diseases these things are capable of carrying.

I am all for live and let live but with bats, while I live here, they can live way over there ...............................................->

Edited to add: I forgot the little bit of trivia I was going to include. Did you know that mosquito's have 47 teeth? We have nicknamed them our little 47 TFer's :)

I have to give you kudos for living "down under", the bat poop would annoy me, the all the dangerous wildlife would terrify me to the point I would never go outside to see the effects of the bats.

I am thankful our bats are small and insectivorous. They occasionally carry rabies, but other than that, they are a positive influence.
