Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

What a busy day . . . I'm exhausted. I sure wish I were younger and could get more done.

Sold over 40 chickens today! Various ages and all. Made some money for my niece's college fund. I think she's still gonna need scholarships and loans though, this is not a way to get rich quick.

Bought 4 too. 2 pairs of Crested Cream Legbars, THE breed I've been wanting for months. I'm very excited to have them.

Congrats on the CCLs, I have my main roo, a baby roo, and one baby girl...(both babies are around 12 weeks), I did loose another chick to a hawk,,,,Can you PM me where you got your CCLs and post some pics???

I would like to get some opinions. I FINALLY was able to get a serama but she is a mix. Her mother was a Belgium D'Anver and her father was a Serama. It got me thinking.  Right now we have one large coop for all of my birds. I would like to get my old coop in working order for my bantam breeds or maybe keep it for just one particular breed for breeding purposes. I would like to sell some hatching eggs and maybe some chicks. I know I'm not going to get rich off of this, it would just be for fun and whatever money I make can go towards feed and upkeep. I like mixed breeds. I think it gives them personality and I like to see what the different chicks look like. What do others prefer? Do you think I will have a harder time selling mixed breeds? Should I just pick one breed to sell? I would most likely use Facebook, Craigslist and the meets at Tractor Supply to sell. I've only been to one show and have NO idea about show quality so even if I do concentrate on one breed it wouldn't be for that. I wouldn't know what to look for and what qualities to breed out or to aim for. Thoughts?

I don't mean to be bursting bubbles, but when I go to swap (and I'm selling) people always buy the purebreds first. The only mutts they're interested in is if they're easter eggers. I had trouble selling some of Sally's CCL over BR mixes (even though I told everyone they would lay pretty green eggs).

You're not bursting any bubbles. I want everyone's opinion and experiences on the matter. I'm only going to have this one extra coop so I want to make the best use out of it. In the future I would like to have several for the different breeds but it will take some convincing my hubby!

For my two cents, with the exception of Olive eggers and Easter eggers, I think most folks want pure breed chickens...and do have preferences for specific breeds....some want lawn candy, some want egg production, and some want exotic or heritage breeds.

As for selling: my understanding is that shows are the best place....you can always learn the SOP for any breed and there are links on BYC with discussions...I think selling eggs and chicks is a bit more complicated than you'd think....my two cents....

Is that one of those movable electric fences, if so how do you like it and is it hard to move?
wingstone, we also have the electric netting, at first i didn't like it cause i was use to regular fence, but it seems to work pretty good at keeping wild life out, not to mention, horses and a mini pig, cats and so on, course if you have chickens that fly it won't keep them in, i have a sfh that flys out when she wants, in the evening she either waits for my husband to open the fence to let her back in or flys back in herself. its easy to move too.

I found an awesome breed yesterday and when I get my own farm, I'm ordering these eggs first. They're bantam double-laced silver barnevelders. They're SOOOO cool.

Did you see those in a poultry magazine? My husband brought one home and they were on the cover! I thought they were pretty also. When i was first looking for another breed, i liked those but had a hard time finding them. I could only find solid black. If you run into any, let us know!

12 eggs is a good amount. I recently had a hen on 17 eggs, and she hatched them all.

WOW! That is a lot of eggs! It should be any day now ....
