Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I have already thought about them coming back, they didn't want to leave our house. The owner said the one pit has a strong prey drive and will kill anything small. I will be keeping my girls in for at least a few weeks now. It all works out because they will be in their new coop this week, so I guess it's perfect timing. The dog owners didn't want to take the dogs back and asked me to keep them. He wasn't mean to them but said he was just sick of them and his son dumped them on him. His son told him to shoot them, my heart sank when he told me that. I can't imagine how someone can look at their sweet faces and not want them. When he left with them I cried and I am tearing up now just thinking about them. I so wish I could keep them but with our 2 dogs, 1 cat ( and a stray I have been trying to warm up to us) 4 chickens and more coming next month I just can't.

Erin:

Don't be so soft on the owner....he stated he was 'sick of them', then they show up on your property...complained about an A_hole kid .....apple doesn't fall far from the tree.....imho....

Well, I got the two "Ameraucana" (I never know how to spell that) from the local ritzy ag store near LMP. I have no idea where they got them. They do have the puffy cheek feathers. Eh, green eggs are fine. They're all the same inside.

oh I agree with you. He did say that he has a male pit at home also. It really is hard to say if the dogs ran away or if they were dumped on our road. Either way I begged him to please not hurt them and I would try to find somebody to take them. He did mention that the dogs all pile in his bed at night to sleep, I guess that gives me a bit of hope for their safety.

A hatchery in New Mexico. I had hope for their quality until recently. All three of my bourbon red boys have imperfect tails. Two have major leakage.

Does anyone nearby have silkie hatching eggs available? Near York/Harrisburg? I'd like to avoid shipping if possible. I'm looking to add fuzzy chickens to my flock and hopefully some good broodies. I'm getting too lazy with the incubators :p

Hi Everyone,
I'm in West Goshen. I only have two chickens left and would love more. It looks from your posts that there are no problems with different ages. Just winter issues. The pair I hhsbe are pretty cute, like a couple of pups that hang together and look out for each other but as their numbers have dwindled they seem to have stopped laying. Maybe I should recognize that I live in an area with too many predators.

Welcome hardy!

Predators are an issue everywhere, it's how you ( we) handle it. Sometimes you need a totally enclosed run, depending on the number of birds. Heavy write helps, chicken wire stops nothing.

Certain breeds are more able to see predators, those with crests and such have limited vision thus need more protection. I need a created breed, and those with large crests rarely last.

Keeping them in the coop during prime predator hours is an option.

Don't give up!

I have two silkies now, my hen just started laying. I don't know if they're fertilized yet. I didn't pay attention when I cracked the two I've gotten open. I will check. I live outside of Gettysburg. I am planning on getting another silkie pullet within the next month, of a different color. I have a black hen and a rooster that looks black, except he's got a silver cape. Not sure what he's called.
