i read this tonight, doesn't it just frost you when city people move out to the country and want to bring the city with them?

Oh boy, I absolutely hate it! I live in the suburbs, and people think that just because they listen to country music (not even the real stuff), wear cowboy hats/boots, and/or drive a truck, they are "country" material. They brag about how country they are, how they want to move out to the country, etc, but these are the same people who can't live without a cell phone or air conditioning, and complain about how their neighbors lawn looks. A good quote someone told me is that "you ain't country unless you bust your *** bailing hay in 100 degree whether".

Man it bothers me so much, you got these city folks who move out to the over-romanced country, since they're "all about that country life". Next thing you know, they're complaining about the noise and smell of the farms, which causes new ordinances that force out the farmers. So much for them being "country material". Stay in the city please and wear your cowboy hat and listen to your county music, the farmers will thank you!

I need help please. I have 15 girls, 2 are 21 wks, 10 are 16 wks. and 3 are about 13wks. I have a cockerel that is about 13 wks . My older girls started laying Aug 7. I have been getting soft shelled eggs about 3 time a wk, now Sat. night I had 1 ok egg, 1 rubber egg and 1 egg very soft shell all in same nest box. I think that means I might have 3 laying now. My question is: I am not feeding layer feed yet because of their ages. I tried giving them oyster shells, but the 16 wk girls are the only ones eating them. I went through about 5 lbs in 2 days. They are all in the same run and coop. I know you should not feed layer feed under 18 wks. What should I do? My 13 wk olds I just got from Beaglady a wk ago Sun. and they will not come out of the coop. They are eating and growing. I do have a slw and br that seem to pick on them, they don't get any feathers but as soon as they venture out they chase them back in. Will this stop soon? No one else picks on them. My leghorns are the bossy ones but they don't bother them. lol

Separate the newcomers so that the older birds can see them, but not peck and intimidate them. Keep them separated, but visible for about a week. By then, they should be more acclimated to each other and get along better.

I agree! Some of my husband's family were farmers and he lived with them a lot. I love going to visit the farm and they left me help with the milking. I loved it! Now we have chickens on our acre and I love them. When we built our house in '72 the area was not built up. Now the farm down the road is selling off his land and of course houses will soon be built. We are not allowed to have chickens but 3 of us have them on my road. I checked with the township after getting mine and they said the way my house sits I can keep them until someone complains! We have deer and bear coming on our property. Now does that seem to be an area that should not be allowed to raise chickens? I have talked to ""country people" about my chickens and they turn there nose up about chicken poop!!!! Country people ha ha!!

I would switch to layer with the next bag of feed, even if you can't separate them. Too much calcium is not nearly as big an issue as it's made out to be, otherwise all our roosters would be dead, not living long full lives in the pens with the hens.

I agree that if you can separate the younger ones for a while that will benefit them. Otherwise, make sure they have plenty of food and water and watch for any sign of serious aggression from the older ones.

I just got reprimanded by one of those about an hour ago...let me explain..

I did morning chores till noon, then I started cooking and canning beets, tomatoes and making dinner ( I do not have air conditioning).. when I suddenly realized I did not have enough lids, I quicklygrabbed my keys to run to the store...
The clerk at giant loudly told me that a person is suppose to clean themselves up before going out, I left the stuff on the counter and left, got me things from a different store....

I also once had a lady stop at the FARM and tell me tthat roosters should only make that noise at sunrise...

Well wingstone I'm shocked!
You mean you didn't put your ball gown and tiara on to go to the store??? My oh my

I'm lucky here I moved from a moorland village( all be it a large one in Yorkshire)
To Cornwall in a very rural, but coastal and touristy place but my house is rural
And I love it, the locals are great, they joke about me being from 'the city'
I guess compared to here its like a city
They make fun of how pampered my chickens are
But I think I'm fitting in
