better late than never. lol I never grow enough basil to make a big batch.

I usually get bunches at the farmers market. You can also spread it on a panini-type sandwich of proscuitto, motzarella, tomato, pesto on french bread and fry panini style. (you could also use smoked ham for a cheaper version). enjoy

guess i'm lucky enough to have a green thumb with the basil, usually i have good luck with most of the plantings i do, of course, thats with a big, big help with my husband, he does the hard work of tilling, helping me weed( he does alot of the weeding ) and he even helps with getting the juice from tomato's. he even planted a second planting of kentucky wonders for me, already had a planting of them, plus yellow and green beans, then he planted a second row of yellow beans, we had so many beans that i picked all the yellows and took them to the auction yesterday, 14 lbs of just yellow, the green i gave to our son to eat, kentuckys i kept for myself, we're eating kentuckys twice a day, not trying to brag, just saying i love to play in the dirt since i got older. AND we love to eat what we grow ourselves

I'm usually good at growing most everything else, but basil is not one of them.

This season I have also had a great crop of Kentucky wonders. It must be the season for beans. I can never get watermelons to grow. I have been able to grow a couple of containers of basil this year. I just kept it for the chickens. I find gardening very therapeutic. The plants are my therapists. Hopefully now that I have chickens to help me, I will be able to grow better crops.

I agree....Green beans have been the only thing doing really well this year (for me)....in fact, since the chooks haven't shown any interest in eating green beans, I have opened the garden up for the chooks to feast....of course they went directly to the cabbage,,,,

I did have them in a large dog crate in the crate and every seemed to lay around it and chirp at each other so I let the loose Friday.  I guess that wasn't long enough.  They are really growing and have been letting me pick them up, especially Mr Blaze. What were you feeding them before I picked them up?  Thanks for the advise.

They had recently started eating layer pellets. All grain from Agway

I don't know the ordinances but I just wanted to say good luck neighbor! I'm not far from you, just outside of Patton I'm sure if you just stopped in at the courthouse they could let you know.

We lost our first hen this morning. She was attacked by our dogs few days ago. She was fine, just a little weak. We left her with everyone else and nobody was picking on her. She was stressed when we tried to separate her. I checked for eggs at 6:30 and she was still alive and moving. But I usually dont let them out until after 7:30 because of predators. Well I fell asleep until 2..I opened up the coop and she was dead. I think it was the ducks. We house the chickens and ducks together The ducks get the floor of the coop and we have a second floor with perches and such the chickens get. Well I think she injured her leg and she couldn't get on top so she stayed on the floor but near pox, our rooster. There were feathers missing from her. But there was no blood so I dont think it was the chickens. I'm trying hard not to blame myself, but IF I wouldn't have fallen asleep or if I just would have let them out at 6:30 she would still be alive. We were already going to hatch out babies so we will have to replace her. Any ideas on how to introduce just 1 chicken? this would be easier if our sussex would go broody.

I had a broody hatch only one surviving chick in the spring....(three others hatched and were found on the coop floor)....its not a preferred situation...I think I was lucky that by week four, his dad had him roosting next to him....none of the other girls gave him a hard time except where food was involved and I made sure mom and baby had a separate source for them...I was also lucky that one of the other big girls took a liking to him and would let him eat under her protection...if you introduce a solo...I'd suggest you be there for the first few weeks so if she gets picked on you can give her a safe 'zone'...and the larger the flock, the more 'hazing' that will occur.....
