Ick, I caught a head cold and can't sleep, even with NyQuil. Chicken question, has anyone seen their egg production drop yet because of day light? I have one chicken that went broody again, but I feel like I still am getting less eggs. Maybe they are upset about being penned up.![]()
Thanks Dhetzel!
Glad it's not just me!
Had my first fox attack this morning. One of my girls is missing and I'm sure she won't be back. My husband let the dog out early this morning when he heard the chickens, but I asked him not to leave her outside, for fear or her barking and waking up neighbors. Later I heard the chickens and opened my back door to find a fox chomping on my favorite hen!
I think she is olay, she got quite a few feathers plucked out and has a scratch above her tail. She still seems to be in shock but I'm sure she will be okay. Any tips on making sure she is okay? Oh, and the dog is on the back porch with the chickens keeping an eye out.
It's so sad to see feathers everywhere, and I'm hoping my neighbors don't find a carcass in their yard. I cant figure out how the fox got my big BO under the fence, because I can't find her!
Welcome! I'm up in Erie Co.Hello from West Chester! I didn't even know this thread existed until someone in the ducks forum directed me to it to get an answer to a question I posted there.
I'm planning to start showing next season, so I'm trying to find a way to get my AI testing done at a reasonable price.I had to call around to several avian vets to even find one of those who can do it, and it's going to cost around $300. That's going to run into a lot of money if we have to have it done every month or two, so I'm really hoping some of you can give me some other alternatives.
Thanks for any suggestions, and it's GREAT to see that there's a PA thread!
I'm sorry about your hens! I lost some of my CX to a raccoon attack about two weeks ago, and it's such a frustrating/sad thing all rolled into one. I hope your hen comes out of it okay. Thanks Dhetzel!

Great coop! Love the covered run.
You may be surprised, my DH went from not being crazy about having chickens, to today, when people come over, he's always happy to have them meet the hens.
Tell him the silkie hen is a special breed of easter bunny that sits on duck eggs. Every time I see that Cadbury commercial with the bunny making chicken noises, I think of my silkies.Boy do I hope we get at least a couple of broody Calls. He told me a good while back that he's never seen a Silkie chicken, but I seriously doubt I could buy one and convince him it's an exotic breed of duck"![]()

So how am I to explain the lack of long ears and a cottonball tail? Oh, and the clucking, and the fact that the bunny lays eggs...
It's a Cadbury bunny!
Be sure to bat your eye lashes while explaining . . .
