Hubby said we do (we were going to process them this weekend but it rained). The guy says he wants an all black one and a black and brown one for eating. He wanted to know what they looked like and we send some pictures. He was really interested in what they looked like. If you are going to eat them why so interested in the color and pattern. Then he asked if we have Muscovy ducks for sale. Hubby said we have Muscovy ducks but they aren't for sale. No where in my ad did I say I had ducks for sale. We found that very odd. I hope he doesn't want to do anything horrible with the roosters. :( Does that phone conversation seem odd to anyone else?

I seem to remember someone telling me about a specific ethnic group that preferred dark feathered birds. Something to do with tradition? Nothing horrible.

okay. Our flock is pretty small right now but we are adding a flock of Silkies and a flock of meat birds.I dont plan on doing any testing until I have both flocks added so I dont have to redo it again.

IMHO PA is a little tougher to get NPIP certified than other states. Looks like Dr. Karen Martin (814) 332-6890 is the one for you to contact in 'Region 1' which is where I think you are. I would start calling now to get things set up. Explain about the meat birds you'd like to bring on to the property and I'm sure they'll work their testing around that. When I was a teenager I lost my all white cat with one blue eye and one golden eye around Halloween. I replied to a lost cat ad in the paper and their all white cat with 2 different colored eyes was gone too. Seemed too much like a coincidence for me. Heard the local park had found some type of sacrifice had happened. I grew up in northeast NJ.

Blarneyeggs I don't know what ethnic group he belonged to. Hubby couldn't hear him well, he said the guy's cell phone was horrible. If that is the case, that would make me feel better. I don't know. Hubby said he got a creepy feeling when he wanted more pictures of the roosters.

And yes PA has that weird law, I can process poultry and sell it but somehow rabbit is different, easier to process by the way...
But I can sell a live rabbit and offer to show you how to process, and that is perfectly legal...

Price will vary for me in depending what is wanted, I plan to keep the pelts for my son in law who is trying his hand at tanning hides...
Sold 2 for 15 each to a snake breeder, he said that he often has to pay 20 for a 6 to 7 week old.....

These prices might be the reason rabbit meat is not common in most houses, hard to feed a family on those prices...

Ditto on all this.

Most meat rabbits sold as breeders go in the $30-35 range.
They ain't cheap, but are prolific breeders. 31 day gestation period, rebreed at 6 weeks, wean at 8, butcher starting around 12. 6-8 kits per litter. Not bad if doing it yourself. Ready to breed at 6 months.

They are expensive because of the butchering regulations, there aren't that many that raise them. A specialty market. And of course Americans in general don't eat things they aren't used to. (which is why no one asks for my pickled watermelon rind at work).
Start up equipment costs (cages) can be kind if pricey if you have many and breed). Doesn't pay to buy cheap cages.
