getting pieces together for the front of the coop.(dry-fit). Excited about closing this thing in finally!! We will be painting or putting siding on the wood next spring. ..looking for siding on craigs list, may be awhile till we find some, but the paint will make things look cohesive...wish we had more time yet this year. Eventually a window will be added to the back wall. This structure is not air tight, not in the least..hahaha, so not worried about ventilation.

Door will be on the left, with a chicken door built in it. This structure will be attached to the brick knee-wall of the coop structure.

the smaller coop inside is obviously getting pulled out before we enclose. SO much more room!
got the run cleaned out & turned over, then added the grass/sod from the extending of the garden..they had a lot of fun!

Birds are all looking a bit shabby right now...

updated pic of the 'kids'!..they are getting their voices...so funny!

told ya this chicken always has this crazy-scary look....

LMP:

Both my BCMs have this look....one actually refuses to eat scratch off the ground if I have some in my hands...she insanely keeps jumping up to grab some out of the cup.....the broody is only slightly more sane because she has a babe to look after....they are nuts...but, the smartest birds in the flock....go figure....

You guys are stuck with me for a few more days. It is killing me to see your birds, but I can't shut up with all this anxiety building up inside of me. Aren't you guys just soooo lucky?

I am about done packing stuff, and the yard isn't too bad. As soon as the kitchen is clean I will bring in the feeders and waterers to scrub. Wish me luck on remembering to shut off the water spigot outside before I leave!

I am popping in to say that today, ten months late, I received my Christmas gift for last year. If I had waited for DH to get it for me, it would be much longer. I am now the proud owner of an All American pressure canner. And there is nothing to can.

I could get an old cockerel out of the freezer, I guess. @fisherlady do I cold pack the meat or hot pack? If anyone else knows, please tell me.
Honestly I haven't packed any of the chicken yet.... I got my PC but have only tried it with cooking down bone/carcass for grinding so far. I had given away all of my canning jars about years ago when my work schedule was nuts and I wasn't gardening. I recently bought a bunch of jars dirt cheap at a yard sale but ended up giving it to a couple of people I know who are kind of in a bind and canning was a real necessity for. I will regather my jar collection over the next few months so I can start meat canning because I would rather have my freezer space back.
For now though.... Wing or Sharron would be much better references than I am on this one!

I found the instructions within the past few hours. I think I am all set with one exception. My cockerels are freezer burned. Bad. It looks like mostly the legs. I am not sure I want to waste time canning meat that is going to taste bad. On the flip side, if I don't can it, it will have to be tossed. Decisions decisions. Any way to make freezer burned meat taste better?

Our family is relocating back to PA from GA next summer and we are looking for an area within 20 -25 miles of Malvern PA that allows backyard chickens.  Can anyone give me some ideas?  I think I read that Phoenixville does and West Chester do but are there any other areas?

Also, if the town/borough allows them, can a HOA ban them?  I really want to avoid HOAS at all costs but we are going to be renting so they might be harder to avoid...

Thanks!

Barb

Hi Barb, East Coventry Twp has residential farming RF zoning. The code says 2 acres to whatever farming you wish. I know many keeping chickens on less, very ahem close to Twp bldg :) Very nice area. Hop skip and 20 min jump back roads to Malvern.

I dont think the net would work. I'll try to explain this to my best ability. But it's a rabbit hutch where they laid their eggs. It's deeper then I can get into without crawling the entire way in and it's about 5 ft tall. But it has a built in nesting box which is fastically just four pieced os wood making a square with a little roof on top of that. That is where they lay their eggs. it's not very big. But I dont think I would fit a net inside there, and if I could not sure if it would be able to get the eggs over the wood ledge. here is apicture of the hutch with the chickens in it last year...5/7 laid their first eggs in here.

this is the nesting boxes. first time they both laid their eggs. these two are always together.

waiting her turn to lay her egg
i see, would be hard to get over the ledge, hope you're little if you have to crawl back there

, i think i would have to have my husband cut a hole back there just big enough for the hand since i'm not little
