The new "Silkie mix" chicken. She seemed very assertive, so I let her out with the other girls. They are not picking on her too much. She is definitely not used to people and clearly doesn't have too much Silkie in her. But she is so black and gorgeous! I named her Malificent.

LMP:

Both my BCMs have this look....one actually refuses to eat scratch off the ground if I have some in my hands...she insanely keeps jumping up to grab some out of the cup.....the broody is only slightly more sane because she has a babe to look after....they are nuts...but, the smartest birds in the flock....go figure....
she is very smart and very curious..tries to follow me out the fencing all the time, she thinks she is a "people"...
roll.png
...yeah, she is nuts...and extremely vocal, she is the one responsible for getting everyone else going...every-morning, and it is not a nice sweet little "bwak"...it is more like gears trying to turn without any lubricant...it can be very irritating when she insists on being right at my head-ear as I clean the coop
he.gif
....I really like her though, now who is crazy

LMP, my granddaughters are looking good!
Stake, I know why your girls are jumping up. I won't say why. But I know.

they do look good huh?! and today they got to go out into the yard-garden and play with the big-girls. They were so happy, they allowed me stand near them without running away-screaming.

We are quite a distance from you. I am in 17967. We travel a bit and are discussing a trip down towards Maryland and Virginia before Thanksgiving. If we are going to be close to your zip during our travels maybe we can arrange a drop off!

My dad is sometimes getting 2-3 dozen quail eggs a day, so we have no shortage. We visit them at least once a week and he always sends us home with a couple dozen!
I recently tried quail eggs and found that I liked them a lot. I thought they tasted a little different than chicken eggs, but not in a bad way. Perhaps with a bit of a gamey flavor.

I was looking through some old photos, posted these pics of my best girl and broody extroidinaire, 'Popcorn'. Love this girl to pieces.

So the turkeys got out of their pen tonight, one is roosting on the house, the other 3 were on the porch railing, I wrested one down and had him most of the way to the coop before remembering I'm not supposed to be lifting anything. I sure hope I didn't set myself back.

I do not think our Wyandotte coop got closed up tonight, I'm going to venture out there and have a look see.
Love the Momma pics Blarney!
I hope you were able to get the rest of your turkeys off the roof...

...not you, but someone else, who should be moving, bending , lifting...geesh lady..take it easy would ya?!...

Well, today is going to be new Silkie washing day. Wish me luck! These girls don't seem to have been handled much, so I am expecting a lot of splashing. It's times like this I wish I had a laundry tub. But I'm thankful I have new free little chickens to tend to.

always "hand wash" your silkies...
smack.gif
...sorry, I HAD to do that...

The big excitement about this canner is the ability to have food in the truck that I cooked. Before, I would freeze everything, and DH would be able to eat my cooking for a week. Now... It is funny that I finally have the canner, and I am going with him. I do cook in the truck. I even have a little grill that we used to cook on quite often, We will have to find a new one.
I have spent the last hour thinking about the bone-in chicken, and I have to ask. Is there any reason I can't season the meat any way I want before canning? I mean, can I go so far as to use Shake n Bake? I was originally thinking I wanted to put parmesan on the chicken. Now I am making myself very hungry thinking of all I want to do to the chicken (ahem! Not how I meant that to come out)!
hey...i was reading in my pressure canner hand book...ahem...that you can "can" fried chicken...yep-yep, that is what I read, soooo..If you want to know more..you have to call

Until she lays her first egg and starts singing. Unless you can make that noise on a regular basis to get him used to it . . .

A list of herbs to use with chickens, . My grandmother used herbs for everything, so why did I not think of this sooner.

Geesh, i am even subscribed to this site/blog....didn't even think of it..sorry..but thank you for reminding me
highfive.gif
...had to some "pinning"...it is soo easy to get side tracked when I do that..heehee...
I have 3 empty feed bags if you want them, Anne. I knew someone here wanted them, so they're stacking up in my garage next to my recycle pile.
now see...here we go...this reminded me of how much I wanted to make one of those feed-bag aprons....boy, I sure do have a lot to get doing!!

Well my girls are being kept quite healthy after ripping up and eating the herbs in my garden.
roll.png
Haha.

My new black Silkie Mutt laid an egg! It's a white egg!
wee.gif
congrats!!! oh, wait..what is a "white" egg?!...hahaha, haven't seen one of those for quite some time now...funny what we get used too huh?!

*Anne..*Wing..anyone else interested...I have to get the book/info. for how we are planting, making beds in the yard....(it is involved & will take some considerable time..maybe even more than my life time), but it will make the area more like a "natural area" than say, a yard with a few beds here and there...eventually everything will be connected , and there will be "paths" to walk around the yard...very little grass, in fact, we could just mulch or stone the paths..the entire yard is the garden...it is really neat to see the end product..I have to find that site/book again...

What color(s) are you looking for? wingstone has some and I have some from her. Mine are rather mixed up colors, but still quite pretty. I might also be able to help you find some other colors from my cousin in MD (and help transport them up to this area).
