I fed the chickens the fermented feed today. I know it's not done fermenting but I read to start feeding on day 2 so they get used to it before it fully ferments. they LOVE it!! I fed them three times. once in morning, which they finished that within 30 minutes or so! then I gave them an extra scoop mid day which was done within 10 minutes lol And filled the bowl up before bed. They are in love with me now and think every time I go outside I should fill the bowl up! So glad they took to it. I was worried since they don't like anything new. They were scared of the ears of corn I left out in the field for them. they hid from it under the chicken hutch! But apparently they ate it because next day there was no corn on it anymore. I have 2 buckets going for the FF. two different methods to see which one will work best for us. I am using the 2 bucket draining method for one. Then using the hot water method from sally sunshine (think thats her name) Sicne they chicks eat a lot less I have theirs in a smaller mason jar and just replace as I use it. I offered it to them three times. I finally figured out how to get them to eat it..I put it in their normal feeding containing over top the dry feed. Goodness forbid I put a different feeder in there! LOL!

when I first started with the fermented feed, I used the nation jar method for the chicks for as long as I could. All I had to do to get them to eat it was sprinkle some of their dry food on top of it and they took to it right away. Once I had to switch to the 5 gallon bucket, I did the two bucket method. For me, it was inconvenient, didn't drain right (took FOREVER) and I lost a lot of the little stuff down through the holes in the bottom. I ditched that method and found a cheap, plastic ladle at Walmart I think and drilled holes in it to drain the water from the feed. It works SO wonderfully now and is quick and easy and no waste

He has come a long way fro attacking ever chance he got He would eat out of our hands now if i let him but im scared he might take some skin with him

we have finished the duck huse now so the chickens wont get bullied int staying awy from the FF during the night. Although the hens think the new duck house make the perfect place to lay their eggs

We dont have room for FF so i use mason jars for the chicks. Then I use a small 2 gallon bucket for FF in the basement. I have 2 two gallon buckets down there now. Hopefully that will be enough to keep the FF going for them. We use sally sunshine hot water method for one bucket and then we use the 2 bucked drainage method for the other to see which one we like best.

Can anyone explain this behavior? It looks to be a dominating action, but it was so sad to watch! My newer tiny chicken who was lowest on the pecking order hopped up next to my new Silkie mix when the Silkie mix was trying to roost for the night on the dog crate. This happened last night too. Malificent ( the Silkie mix) just lays real low and tries to almost "snuggle" underneath the little chicken, while the little chicken pecks away at her back and neck. Eventually the little chicken stopped and I put them in the coop for the night. Is this dominating behavior any of you have seen? I tried to snap a pic but they broke it up when came out to the porch.

Yes, that is just the little one showing dominance, looks like they are doing good together, that may reverse once the silkie mix is more comfortable
