2 more since the last inventory - more Marans?

those marans are hatching like crazy! Up to 15 chicks total so far.
2 rhodebars
3 ameraucanas
1 CCL
1 Welsummer
8 Marans

3 more Marans eggs have pipped in the last hour lol.
The rest of the welsummers, rhodebars and last ameraucana aren't doing anything yet. The sticky chick that I helped out is a Rhodebar and seemed a bit early coming out so I'm guessing the rest of them may not be until tomorrow.

So I am a little north of Pittsburgh, and my lovely and courageous daughter is recovering from a serious illness. I want to take the leap into chicken ownership again. Once I get my coop and run, is there anyone nearby where I could buy some pullets? Doesn't really matter what breed, although my daughter thinks silkies are cute... I am thinking of 5 chickens to start (and I am going to resist chicken math). Of course, still have to convince hubby, but I guess I could be like Alaskan and hide the coop in the woods...

Howdy from Chester Co...I'm at the other end of the state, so I can't help you with chicks....but there are a few folks on here in your neck of the woods who excel at helping fill coops.....

It's been nearly 8 hours and the suspense is building -- any more hatched?
I'm impressed by the Marans hatch, those were the first ever incubated from my flock. I'm glad I stuck some in the incubator since then, I can't wait to see some of them hatch.

Are the Rhodebars and Welsummers pullets also?

I'm closing out the night with 19 total hatched, mostly marans :) They're doing really well and some of them have already started eating and drinking. The welsummer that hatched looks to be a pullet and so does the one rhodebar. Not sure about the other yet. Since it was sticky, it's feathers aren't quite drying right or maybe just have junk still in them. That little one also looks like one foot has curled toes so I might have to brace them. I'm thinking that one may be a cockerel since he looks a bit lighter. I'm hoping I'm looking at them right lol. Between the CCL, welsummer, and good looking rhodebar, I'm hoping I didn't mix up which is which lol. I still have most of the rhodebar eggs in the bator since only 2 hatched but they all looked good before lockdown. All but one welsummer egg still in there too and one ameraucana egg. I'm hoping the rest hatch tomorrow. Today was crazy and exciting though, so many marans! They were popping out like popcorn! 12 Marans hatched safely (and quickly) :) now, if I wake up in the morning to a bator full of stripped babies, I'm not going to know who's a Welsummer and who's a Rhodebar lol.

To the "trained eye", they are easy to separate. First, and RB males have a really bright white spot on their head. The overall color may vary some, but the spot does not. RB pullets have definite black edging on their chipmunk stripe and that is lacking in Welsummers. Finally, the leg color is the biggest givaway, Welsummers are very yellow, RB's are more greenish.

I think you are more likely to confuse the CCL with the Rhodebar than the Welsummers. I guess you will need to raise them all and sort it out later

Great news on the Marans - 12 of 14 shipped eggs is more that I expected. Since that was the main breed you wanted, it is especially nice. That will give you a nice flock. How many are blue? Given the number of blue hens in the pen, if they average out, you should get about 25% blue and 75% black.

I'll have to keep that in mind then. I was going by the fact that the CCL hatched first a day early and is steadier on her feet lol. She's also rather small but very quick lol. The Welsummer, I was looking at the eyeliner to remember which one she was lol.
I have to double check but I think about 4 are blue and the rest are black. For a while, they were all popping out black and I didn't think there was going to be any blues. They were just taking their time :)
The ameraucanas are 1 splash, 2 blue. I kinda hope I have 2 pullets and one cockerel. I'm in love with their chubby form and big fluffy cheeks!

You guys are killing me with the chick pics!!
My one reoccurring thought is that I never had a male Marans chick. If I were to get back into chicken raising, I would never be able to reproduce those results!!
I also never had a blue egg hatch. The broodies did hatch quite a few EE. That is something I always wondered about. Maybe it was the Ameraucanas' eggs.

So MC.... how long are you going to be around before heading out on the road again? If you are really missing chicks we can set you up with a bunch of cornishX and let you keep them (with us providing the feed) until they are ready to butcher or you are ready to hit the road, which ever comes first.... you'd get to enjoy them for a few weeks and end up with some meat in the freezer.... win/win! LOL
