Haha, my girls will not stay in the coop. Granted, it's small, but it is so cold out there! I'm glad I have the brooder light on for them on the covered porch, definitely seems to help. That and a cuddle puddle. :lol:

What about those of us not on Facebook?

There is a guy near me had them last year but most of his flock was wiped out by fox last fall. I raised some two years ago and didn't manage to get any last year.

It's just a cement block wired with two light fixtures in the holes. We put two 150 watt bulbs in and covered the holes with ceramic tiles. I have never heated the coop but -14 I feel is too cold. It's slow heat and they can't get burnt. We usually use one in the run to keep the water from freezing. It's hooked up to a thermostatically controlled outlet.

Thanks for the info, we could use one in the coop, it would be safer than the heat lamp.

The year I had the reds, they were in a pen but flew out regularly. They would come down to the house and wait for me to get their food, then walk ahead of me and wait for me to open their gate and feed them.

One day I looked out and there were 3 extra birds around, a wild flock they had called in. There are wild turkey slowly moving in to the area.
 
Update on the Janoel24 incubator:

It's plastic, it's fan forced and the fan can't be turned off. Instructions are horrible, settings are°C only.

Handy hole to add water, but you can't see reservoir. Clear sides so you can watch the hatch.

Actually worked decent. I put in the eggs, turned it on, no thermometer, no humidity gauge. Didn't do anything but let it operate. I also put eggs in my normal incubator, a homemade one. It has worked successfully for a couple years.

Hatch rate was slightly higher in the Janoel, but not statistically significant. Eggs were quail, which I never have huge success, and had been chilled due to shipping and weather.

I will try it in a week or two with chicken eggs and probably calibrate the thermostat and monitor humidity more.

It was actually better than I expected. I did put a baffle over the fan to reduce the windstorm during lockdown, but didn't block it completely.

i think I would mover them for hatching to one without a fan.
you are not alone quail just seem hard to hatch lately
