After reading thru some posts I missed, thought id ask y'all (sorry originally from the South). I read somewhere that when you have dark eggs, like marans, sand some color off in lines around the eggs presumably for candling. Of course then I read do not wash off the bloom everywhere else. What is your experience? I could try half and half I suppose.

I wouldn't intentionally remove the bloom. I wait to candle Marans and Welsummers until they are about 2 weeks old, then it's easy to see the contrast between the air cell and the chick's body. Any that don't have that sharp distinction are not fertile and get tossed.

I was thinking I may not really have the option of deep litter method, anyway... I think the lip of wood is only 3/4 inches before it'll be in the nest boxes. Hmm, cost of wood chips may be prohibitive. I'll experiment this Summer. At least I have the poop tray under the roost, for PDZ!

Ok here's another newbie question. I keep reading about DE...Some people say it's bad to put on the floor of the coop and others say good. Some people say they use it as a dust bath...I'm so confused now

Oh and what about putting something on the floor like linoluem? So it's easy to clean....There is so many good ideas and I'm not sure what would be the best to do for my coop. I know I want to cover the roost board so that it's easy to clean all the poop off and I want to hang their water and feed and I want to put some compost in a corner for them to scratch at and an old tire for a dust bath...my head is just spinning

Mis:

I did my coop with the peal and stick 1' linoluem squares from HD...seems to me most inexpensive and easy to replace....I haven't used DE but a friend mentioned it works good but if it gets rained on you need to buy more....I dunno....???

Annjee:

I have about the most powerful flash light you can get ....a microfire.....I have eggs in the bater that cannot be candled...some marans some others...for those, I just keep turning them and hope for the best...for my two cents....I wouldn't mess with the shell...

So, my SQ silkie rooster died today.... I moved my flock into my aviary last week and they seemed to be fitting in fine, but today I found him in the aviary pond dead ... He has feathers covering his eyes so maybe he walked into because he couldnt see and drowned..... Its a real shame
