I had a coop and run in my run last year to introduce some birds. I had them sperate but adjacent for at least a month. When I finally combined, I lost all 11 young ones. They were around ten or eleven weeks old at the time.

Be careful with introductions!

Yikes! I have a bunch of drak cornish and delaware babies that will be joining the big gals and guy in a while, along with sharing a run with the turkeys. I've been nervous about the rooster since he's been trying to bully us around lately, but he got into the turkey pen the other day (probably to eat the mealies we dropped in there that the poults weren't eating), and he didn't bother them at all. The turkeys, on the other hand, got into the meaties tractors where the delaware and dark cornish chicks are hanging out and the poults were being so mean even though they had all brooded together for several weeks!

I am happy to report that all my chickens successfully stayed in their coop outdoors last night!

YEAH!   

now I can clean up the indoor area they were in!      

The big gals are coming over to the dog crate where the 6 week old ones are in and trying to peck at them thru the wire!  .............power struggles..............geesh!

Congrats! I knew they'd be fine.

Hatching update from my broody silkie. She hatched out 2 silkie babies, and 3 easter egger babies. One silkie egg was a dud and she kicked it out from under her. I didn't think the one easter egger was going to hatch. It pipped yesterday and didn't do anything since then, just the one hole. Today I assisted it. Ikicked away from I cracked the egg and left the membrane and put it back under momma. She was moving around so much it didn't stay under her and got so cold and stopped trying to hatch. I got most of the membrane off and left the bit that was still attached to the belly and put it under momma and hoped for the best. Tonight I went to see if it was alive or dead. I was expecting it to be dead since the last time I seen it, it was not looking so good. I got a great surprise to see them all running around momma! Yay for Blue Bell, she did great. I will try to get pictures of the cuties, she was keeping them hidden on me.

I checked 2 chicken eggs and 1 duck egg in the incubator. There was veining and movement!! I can't wait for more fluffy butts.

Excellent work Blue bell! It is nice when they do all the work!

I got such a shock tonight. The chick that hatched from @troyer's eggs in December laid her first (shell-less) egg! I didn't think she would yet because she is so tiny and barely has any wattles. She is also so skittish that she never is around long enough to squat for me.

I thought I saw her in the coop the other day, but I thought for sure she was still too young. Apparently not, but she is a phantom layer.

Troyer, she tries to roost in the nighbor's arborvitae hedge that is against our fence every night. Do you have any other hens that prefer to sleep outside? I'm hoping she will grow out of it, when she is a bit older and find her place in the flock.

What a sight. Every night I go out with my flashlight, stand on the trash can next to the fence, and pull my chicken out of the bush. She blends in so well! I don't know how she gets up 8'+ high.

Woah... that's amazing! I wonder if the person you got that roo from gets albino babies.

Chippy...sorry to hear....be vigilant...I've lost three in two days....I have mine in the pens, but even then, a fox could jump in if they really wanted...I am getting more traps tomorrow.....

Some of them will roost as high as they can. It helps when they aren't free ranging on a daily basis. Last summer I had some that were so determined to roost outside in the trees, that I ended up just giving them a covered run instead of free ranging. It is not unusual for them to begin laying at 5 months.

Hi again from Apollo,

Did my first hatch of shipped eggs and it went terribly. Half of them got scrambled in the mail and they all had wonky air cells. None hatched. :s so if anyone is hatching wheaten or blue wheaten ameraucanas, I'd love to get a few.

Wow... that's terrible, so sorry. We have a trap set up, and have only let the birds out when we're out there since the incident.

I hate all this fox talk! No way for me to protect all my runs. Hopefully the 5 foot fence makes all the little critters in the woods more attractive than my chickens.

The rooster I believe throwing the gene was actually an eBay egg about three years ago. I got six, hatched two, kept the roo, sold the hen. Wasn't really crazy about the lemon cuckoo ORP, but kept him because he was a good flock watcher. Now two generations crossing with my BBS, also eBay, this happened.
