So I'm waaaay behind here, looks like I missed this fun farm day right in Media no less (Everybody's Home Town).
I'm not gonna lie, this week has sucked. Found out the birds in my quarantine pen have MG, I had chicks hatching from that coops and needed to cull the chicks and the actively hatching eggs. -Cause that's why I signed up for this whole poultry thing....so I can be a chick killer.
Apparently there is a way to hatch eggs out of infected birds by giving the eggs a 'Tylan Ice Bath', looks complicated and a real PIA, but my son loves these birds and wants to move forward with their line. We haven't even recovered from last year's Mycobacterium, seriously with this?...
do you have a link to the article for the tylan ice bath? I have a few eggs from the girls I had to put down and my lavender roo that had to go. I'doesn't really like to keep their bloodlines. I loved those birds
Unfortunately we lost one of our Bourbon red poults tonight he was 2 weeks old today. A few days ago, he started acting very lethargic and weak. I managed to perk him up with some electrolytes and scrambled eggs for a day or so but he was just too weak. I came home tonight and he was gone the other 4 are still doing great and are growing like little weeds (@SilkieSensation-the 3 from you are all doing wonderful).
Glad they are doing well. The 4 marans/brahma chicks I hatched from you are doing great & no casualties in that brooder so I'm assuming they weren't exposed to the sick roos. I'm holding off adding anything else to that brooder just to make sure but I think they are fine.

Someone asked me how many chickens I had.
I told them I didn't count roosters, anything not of laying age, broodies, anything I planned to eat or sell, turkey or quail or anything that was part of a project.
so am I !!! must be something in the water..(or the not smoking thing )).
seriously though, these 2 are spoiled rotten little babies, they are much more people friendly than any of the ducks and easy on my wallet since no matter what food I put in front of them they prefer to eat grass and weeds.
You all have been busy around here! How are everyones gardens? Mine is growing like crazy. I will have to take some pics today. Only a little over a week til my broody is due to hatch....
Garden is doing terrible, I'm way behind and doubt if anything will come to fruition from it. But on the bright side I did get the plot all nice and tilled, now I just gotta put something edible in it. Although my area does have a frost warning for tonight into tomorrow. Although the chicks are growing like weeds. Even though I see them everyday I think they have a growth spurt every time I turn my back on them.
Only started getting my garden in this week. Way behind. Got the corn patch tiled and planted, a half pound of seed, it's big. Tomatoes and peppers and some cukes for pickles. The sugar pass struggled in the heat last week.
Oh, and pumpkins, squash and watermelon got planted down in the patch in the field. Guess I didn't do too bad so far.
And I love my new mower!
This used to take twice the time, now only 2-3 hours. The real lawn only takes an hour. Now I can use the old mower to keep paths open through the trees.
This field has the vine plants, corn, elderberries, and trees, mostly poplar plus some oak and mulberry and sugar maple, and some wildlife spread stuff. Been throwing in clover seed as I can, will add wildflowers and sunflower as well over time.
My quail cages are 2x3, ten inches high. I have them suspended in a frame over rabbit dropping trays. I have since taken the waterer out and gone to nipples. The layer cages have roll out trays for the eggs and are mounted at a slight angle to make gathering easy.
Quote: This is great news! I'm getting pretty low fertility from the roo I'm using now, so thanks!
if you drive the entire way to see CC, you better be stopping to see me...
