Well, woke up this morning, fed all the adults outside and changed Ariel's bandage (her foot is looking great btw). But then, I went to the brooder to feed the babies and found that our little runt CCL, Flora, passed away overnight. I can't say it's a big surprise. I've been watching her for a while now. She was just failing to thrive.

I'm sorry she didn't make it.

I have lots of extra CCL chicks if you think you can sneak a few into your house. Maybe they can hitch a ride with someone going that way.

If anyone has a broody (or running incubator) and wants some hatching eggs, let me know. I hate the idea of putting CCL eggs into the fridge to sell for $3 a dozen. It seems like they deserve a better fate than that . . .

She was just failing to thrive.

Sorry to hear about the little one. The chicken train will be in operation the end of this month if you are looking for a replacement.

Harbor Freight was advertising a 30'x20' tarp for $50....I'd estimate that's more than enough for your hoop coop....my two cents,,,,

I usually buy way to much stuff at that store and this is a good reason why.

@Chaos18 I'm excited for the chicken train I'm hoping to get a Bourbon red Tom through it as long as she can make the route work to meet me I'll be able to hatch another CCL girl in the spring.

@dheltzel, it's no big deal. Not all of them are meant to make it. At least I'll have first dibs on pullets in the spring

That **** hawk was out today. When I went to look outside, it was just sitting on the ground waiting for the chicks to come out from under the Hosta. Thankfully, their Mama has taught them well and they are excellent at hiding.

Penelope is still alive. She eats and drinks and walks like a penguin still. She can't make it back into the coop at night. I put her back in at night. She still hasn't laid that dang egg!

I had a busy weekend. We built tanks to put our koi and tilapia in for the winter. The weather got cold real quick this week, down to 44 on Friday. Today we moved everyone inside. My asthma is killing me and I was having a hard time trying to keep up with everyone.

Since it was a nice day out I had the chickens out. They were up by the barn visiting the turkeys when a little button buck came out of the woods in the backyard. Because the chickens couldn't see him (cause of a slight rise in between them) and he couldn't see them he stuck around for a little bit. He must have made a noise or something because the chickens came running with Kevin (my SLW roo) leading the charge to see who was making noise. The button buck must have never been charged by chickens before because he took off running with his tail up in the air the moment he saw them coming. It was pretty funny to watch happen.

Throwing a chicken train update here since it's just been mentioned and it's more efficient than a bunch of separate PMs... I was hoping to make some stops on my way east on Friday the 30th and then a few stops on my way back west on Monday. Turns out my niece's birthday party is Friday night and my kids school Halloween parties are Friday morning so I'll be racing from one thing to the other with no stops on Friday. I'm going to look at the places on a map and figure out a new plan... I do have to get down to Chiques chicks at some point before I leave (probably Saturday morning) because he has some chickens for my sister, so I'll see what I can do on Saturday morning and which route I can take to hit the rest on my way out. Will send out messages as it gets closer and I figure out my routes.

I hope my chickens are all okay tonight. Haven't had any predator issues since I started locking the foster chickens up in plastic crates every night, it's a hassle to go out so late (have to put my kids to bed first so sometimes it is really late), but it keeps them safe. Tonight I went out and found my main coop empty! The run door had slid closed - my oldest let them out this morning and must not have anchored the pull sting down. So the chickens were locked out of the coop and sleeping in the tree in the run. Three of the girls were actually on the ramp and the water bucket next to the ramp so I opened the door and put them in, I tried to get Romeo out of the tree but I couldn't reach him well enough to pick him up, I only succeeded in knocking him down and he took cover under the coop where I can't reach him. All of the other girls were too high up in the tree. We've had a lot of losses from birds sleeping in that tree over the summer and I'm afraid for them.

Also, anyone have any experience with a chicken scratching around in the nest boxes? For the last week or so the straw has been all scratched up and kicked out of the nest boxes and we've been getting broken eggs as a result... The eggs aren't pecked or eaten, they are getting cracked by being kicked around. The straw kicking is taking place in all nest boxes, even the ones that no one uses... Especially the ones that no one uses. What gives?
