hello all! I have not been following posts for awhile..............there are so many that I just had to jump to the latest...........

I have a newly laying wyandotte chicken and I have noticed some blood on the outside of the egg shell.

She has started laying maybe 2 weeks ago.

Its not a large amount of blood.............but I am wondering if I should be doing something to help her or is it just "growing" pains?

Anne----I just read your post about the passing of your mom...............I am so sorry for your loss. I feel for you and wish I could say something that would provide some comfort . I worry about the loss of my parents too. Its just unfathomable to me ............

I have noticed this once in a while with pullets or with a larger than normal egg and have always attributed it to the 'growing pains' as you mentioned.
I am certainly not an expert but I do know it has never caused any acute issue with any of our hens. I would watch for any increase in amount or frequency of the bleeding and I would also do a physical inspection of the pullet in question to make sure any skin tears from the stretching from passing eggs aren't infected and to also check for further injuries or discharge.
Any open wounds or inflamed areas need cleaned and then probably covered with some blu-kot or similar treatment to discourage picking if the area is in any way visible to the other hens.

I might be away for New Years. And I won't be back until the third. Fine if all goes well. Not if any duckings hatch early or need help.
Hmmm... I think I might need a flock sitter.

Maybe delay the start date of the hatching? I would like to help if I can, but I'm a total newbie and have no idea how to help ducklings hatch.
