My son has literally been praying every night that his favorite chicken is a pullet, but I think that even I have to admit Sweet Pea is a boy.
I am really hoping to find him a nice home where he can have a group of hens and NOT become dinner! We have had him since he was newly hatched--he was always the smallest and the sweetest and now he certainly is the most interactive of my young flock. Anybody want this pretty boy for Christmas? (The Barred Rock--not the human!)

Are you not allowed roosters where you live?

Looks like I have to confine my ladies for a few days again. Sky went and started yet another hidden nest and talked Cookie into joining her with it. Both girls were persistently trying to get under my shed again after I blocked the opening. What am I going to do with these girls! They had 5 eggs under there so far. Hopefully I found them all. I need to hurry and get my breeding pens set up so that I can keep Sky laying in one place.

Yup, that's a boy. The comparison with the hen that is twice as dark is the giveaway, since males have 2 genes for the white barring and females only have 1.

I wish I knew someone that could take him. I know a lot of people with extra roos they want to find homes for, but no one looking for one (except the people that plan to eat them). Someone ought to run a "retirement home" for extra roos and older hens. I suppose that would be quite the challenge though, both those types are often dead set on working their way to the top of the pecking order, with plenty of injuries as a result.

I hope you can find someone to give him a home.

Pretty quiet here. I have almost all the parts gathered to build my new incubator. I am mostly cloning the Sportsman incubator I already have, but putting in 6 trays instead of 3, so it can hold 576 chicken eggs in addition to the 288 in my Sportsman. If anyone is interested, I will post pics as I go. I expect it all to cost about $500. If you opted for only 3 trays like a Sportsman, it would be about $100 less ($400).

I would be very interested, I am also planning on making a cabinet incubator/hatcher myself sometime after the new year.

I would also be interested in pictures. I'm building an incubator, but it's mainly out of free stuff I've picked up (but I'm definitely buying a thermostat & a hydrometer new). It should hold about 4-6, 40 egg trays when finished which is plenty for me at the moment.

400

Got my first turkey egg ever today! Not sure who laid it but I'm excited!
