Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Hi folks. I'm just going to pop in here so that I can get updates. Love all your pictures, especially Lacey, she's gorgeous! I'll be raising a bunch more chickens, ducks, and turkeys this year (and adding geese and goats, oh my!) and I'd like to see what other localish folks are up to and make some connections... and perhaps join in some egg or chick trading in the future? Eh? :frow

There's a,ways someone with chicks or eggs ready to sell or barter... :D

Found a cabinet incubator for sale nearby...cheap! Picking it up on tuesday :)

You lucky duck! Is this your third incubator?

Turkeys?! I'm jealous, I want to raise turkeys so bad. Just got to wait it out....Husband thinks that 17 chickens are enough right now, lol.

There are never enough chickens! :old

How hard are they to pluck?

Bourbon red are like plucking a really big chicken, maybe easier. I scald, then hang them at about chest height with a tub underneath to drop the feathers in. I can easily do the or for in an afternoon, beginning to end, but my hands aren't young and don't work well all the time.

Two years ago I used a friend plucker ( tub type). With mixed results. They were pretty big for the plucker.

I just bought a plucker, I bought the big size but I think its sorta big for chickens... no win situation I guess.... maybe I need to loose the chickens and just do turkey!

Morning Sally!

The big plucker are nice because you can do multiple chickens at once. Three one I was using could do two, maybe three chickens at once. One turkey. If it wasn't huge. The turkey this year dressed out around 15-17 pounds. Not sure they would have fit.

The wild turkey that took up residence in my yard last month would probably fit much better.

you got it Ray, however our cook pot was too small to dip two birds, oldest son got us one of those propane turkey cookers so now we can do two at a time!
