Cuteness Alert!

Janeway had another hatch, cold weather made it strange, she hatched from Sunday night through Tuesday, nearly a 42 hour from first to last, which is odd for broodies when all the eggs were set at the same time... but she did 7/7, she had an early quitter and a non-starter that were pulled on the 10 day mark... one to hatch was unexpected, since the air cell was on the side of the egg, but it made it on it's own and we can't even tell which of the last 3 it is (the last 3 hatched while we were at work).... so without further rambling...


















all are barnyard mixes...

That's absolutely adorable! You seem having broodies all the time.

I know. I'm very pleased, I guess experience is a real asset when faced with 31 females

I only wished I had made the switch earlier. Oh well, in about 2 weeks I have 93 eggs hatching all from that 1 roo. That should get me caught up on all the orders for the sexlinks, and then some.

I don't think the Lavender roo is gettin any lovin from the ladies, but he seems to be taking things very philosophically. It may be that maturity comes late to the silkied birds. I was looking over his younger siblings and I think I am going to have only 4 hens, 2 lav and 2 black split to lav. I'm thinking about what sort of tractor to build them that is well protected from the weather, yet will get them the fresh greens they want.

My girls (my first chickens ever) just starting laying this week and we are thrilled! They are funnier and sweetier pets than I ever could imagine!
 
*UPDATE* it is in fact feather picker/eaters. I caught 4 of my girls in the act and they are now preying on a second girl as well :-(

How can I stop this behavior? ??

So far I picked up a big bag of black oil sunflower seeds to help with their protein. How much of this should I be feeding?
