Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I'd like to get a hold of two barred rock hens or something else that can handle the winters that isn't a Rhode Island red
Almost any breed handles winters in PA. The biggest issue may be frostbite on combs, esp the males. If you get a breed with a very small comb, then that is a problem of no significance. For that reason, Ameraucanas and Easte Eggers are quite popular.

The SPR do seem good in winter, and they are moderate layers, but I don't have any pure chicks on the ground right now. I do have eggs though.

Many breeds are good in PA, as DHetzel mentioned, so eggs, broodiness, personality and even color can be legitimate considerations as long as decent coop conditions can be provided.

The chicken train is a person that collects chickens ducks etc. along a route across Pennsylvania. Other people meet up with the train conductor, and either take a bird or two, or give them another one. Sometimes three birds jump off, and the receiver will deliver them to others.

You have to look for a heating pad that does not turn off. You can private message Sally sunshine, and she will tell you a few brands that don't turn off.
Thank you for the clarification.... And thank you for the welcome!

Thank you !

I bought this one that never turned off itself:

I'm very happy with the heating pad system. Much safer and more comfortable for the chicks.
Thank you. Like the idea. Just need to implement
Just in case you missed the explanation

Chicken train rolls through this weekend!
Sadly I will have to miss the train this weekend

. My coop is almost full, 4 BO hens, and six, two week old silkies waiting to enter it. Crossing my fingers they they can get along harmoniously!

Next year I am hoping for an EE hen and Salmon Favorelle hen (sp) Perhaps if the train is still functioning and has either of the two I can meet it!!!!
You have to buy one that has an 'always on' feature... Sunbeam makes one that is very popular. I don't have time to link now, but if you search MHP or mama heating pad on BYC you should find a huge thread about it :)

edit - look at me hastily replying before seeing that you've been answered three times over already, lol
That's what I love about this place, the abundance of help....so thank you for your response.

They are doing great! We had them inside for the first few days and they spent their first night outside (with the Mama Heating Pad brooder) last night. They did great and love being on grass :)
Adorable! I'm glad they're doing well. I've raised some chicks up to a few weeks old while searching for someone to take them but never let the chicks outside during that time. I took one outside once when he was a couple weeks old and he was so afraid of the grass that I never tried again.
