So, would you call that barring? I was afraid I'd be attacked if I called it barring instead of speckles.

Yeah, it seems that he hoes have strong barring genes. Her flock are mixes from my flock, We have 2 barred rock hens and a mix mutt rooster, Grayson, with prominent barring (I think he's a bar rock cross himself). Grayson has sired many, many chicks for us and it seems his barring traits are strong, we get a lot of 'Mini Graysons' in our mixes...thankfully he has an incredible personality and passes that along with his barring!
That's great! Ducks are really fun. What kind of duck you have? One more month and I will finally have my chicks from Meyer!!!! It has been killing me to see all the babies at TSC and not bring any home.....ok well thats the partial truth, I did bring 2 ducklings home......![]()
"barred rock" is an easy to replicate pattern because both black and barring are dominant. If you crosses a Legbar and any black breed (australorp or black Ameraucana, for ex), all the resulting chicks will strongly resemble a barred rock hen in coloration - even though that color is not present on either parent. That's the question I always have: How could your barnyard mix chicks all look like BRs? I remember your roo is not a BR, and have some colorful hens. It's a great idea to get some Ameraucana chicks from Jess. They are such eyecandies that lay blue eggs and will give you some green egg layers.![]()
So call it Cuckoo, which is the barring gene without the slow feathering (and maybe other) gene that gives the crisp barring that exhibition barred rocks have. I use barring because that is the genotype, even if the phenotype gets called cuckoo. So, would you call that barring? I was afraid I'd be attacked if I called it barring instead of speckles.
It's a descriptive word for people tooSo call it Cuckoo, which is the barring gene without the slow feathering (and maybe other) gene that gives the crisp barring that exhibition barred rocks have. I use barring because that is the genotype, even if the phenotype gets called cuckoo.
Cuckoo is a descriptive word for a chicken, don't you think?
Khaki Campbell. They are 5 and a half weeks old now, they are pretty funny, but I didn't think they would be so skittish, they are very scared of everything including the family even though they were raised in our house for the 1st few weeks and got a lot of attention. They live in a small coop outside now with an attached run, but spend most of the day in the coop and don't really want to be in the run, we open the run for them while we are at home so they can free range in the yard, but sometimes they don't even have interest in leaving their enclosure, if we do manage to get them to come out they seem to enjoy picking around at the ground, we have a pond also, and they of course are scared of that too, they look at it but really don't have interest in swimming. weird birds! That's great! Ducks are really fun. What kind of duck you have?

Yes! Would love to see the set up. I have the feeling they like more of an open air roosting spot based on where I'd have to catch them to put them away. It's got to be tough figuring out a open air situation that is also predator proof.
Quote: I am picturing emorems0 showing up with a clip board next time... 'check your inventory and uh, please sign here'.
Yes, who is Jess? Not in the market for blue layers myself...just nosey.Who's Jess I would like to have some blue layers to go good with my green and brown eggs in the cartons
I would call it Cuckoo... and Ha! I hear ya on the 'attacked' thing. Not on this thread though...but some others can be quite harsh. Some examples:So, would you call that barring? I was afraid I'd be attacked if I called it barring instead of speckles.
**Do NOT for one minute think that your EE is an Ameraucana Did you buy it at a feed store?? Well, then it is nothing more than a glorified mutt. And do NOT spell Americana with an 'I'.
**You MUST spell Marans with an 's' -even in the singular. EVERY TIME or don't even bother to post.
lol oh yeah, there's a lil bit a crazy going on in the poultry world. Helloooo people, they're chickens, get a grip.
