Anyone in SE PA interested in genetic hackle (fly tie) or longtail breeds (Phoenix, Sumatra, etc) ? I am placing an order for chicks and could pick up some extras and split the shipping costs.

I think any chook feathers would work well for most flies.....BTW one of the three BC Marans is a boy.....and I think he's going to be a looker...lots of copper and there's a green sheen to the black.....was going to give him away, but maybe not....the girls are also looking good too...one blue/one black...both with lots of copper....only draw back is that they are not really human friendly....very flighty....

Thank you...I decided to try tonight while they are still on the enclosed porch, plus it is a little warmer. They seemed to settle down sooner and I went out to check on them a few minutes ago and they are snoozing.

This is the first time I had chicks so I guess I worry too much.

Not at all! We worry because we care. :hugs

MCC:

Just to let you know.....usually the black ties are UV resistant....white/clear one will last a year + but will fall apart at some point.....my two cents....

You are 100% right! Thanks for the remainder!

Good night all! Wish me luck later! I think I'm going to cry for a month straight after the funeral. Still can't believe he's gone.

Thanks @TillyPeeps
. The closest is about an hour away. My sister knows a place "out in Lancaster Co", maybe that's it, or maybe there is a closer one. I wish there was a closer processor. Seems like a great business opportunity for someone willing to do the work.

There is someone in the Ephrata area (Lancaster county). I can get the info if anyone wants it. I'm guessing he is licensed, a lot of people go there with ducks and chickens.

So today we are having our roof done. I'm use my parrots will be FREAKING out with all the banging, as we live in a rancher. I think I will bring my dog with me to work so she can stay calm. But guess what? My roofer has chickens! We started talking about it when he came by to give us a quote. I am hoping he will let me pop by his home to meet his wife and see their set up. That should be free with the purchase of a new roof, right?

People that tie flies can be rather snobbish about their materials - they are "ar-teests" ya know. I don't care about tying flies, but the long soft hackle and saddle feathers are quite unique compared to regular chicken breeds.

In my experience, both Marans and Welsummers make the best "flock roos". They seem particularly concerned about protecting and caring about their hens. And they get big and strong enough to give some predators pause. I heard a story of one of the Welsummers I sold as a chick charging a hawk that had landed on one of his hens. Scared the %^$% out of the hawk apparently, and I can believe it, they are tall and imposing even when standing still, and Marens are of the same stature and similar nature. I've never had either get aggressive with me, whereas the tiny (by comparison) Legbars always seem to want to challenge me - I think they must feel like Napoleon, too short to matter much. I laugh when a Legbar comes at me, but if one of my mature Marans attacked that could get dicey, so I'm glad if someone if going to get feisty, it's the little dudes.

You should keep that Marans roo, at least until you see how he is mannered.

My blue hens don't show much copper, I'm glad their daughters picked up better coppering from their dad. Without copper they don't look any different than an Austrolorp with razor stubble.

I'm definitely interested in talking to him. I am going to compile a list of people that can do processing. I'm not sure how this will all work out, I may need to engage the services of several smaller processors rather than count on a single one being always available.

I have a tom turkey I need to get processed soon because I need his cage and he's not tame enough (or smart enough) to free range.
