Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I am so upset. Chester Copperpot (our tom turkey) died this morning. :hit  I'm 95% sure it was due to dehydration which makes me feel a million times worse. Yesterday morning when I was feeding and watering everyone, I saw that the turkeys' big waterer was empty but the toddler was inside screaming for me, so I just poured what was left in my water jug into the base and decided to come back and fill it up properly later.... but I forgot.

When I came out this morning, Chester was laying down in the bottom of the run, not looking like himself. He was drooling and was wobbly/fell over when I tried to stand him up. He reminded me a lot of my sister's dog when she got really badly dehydrated one time.  I tried to give him water from a little bucket but he wouldn't drink. So I mixed up some electrolyte stuff and came out with a dropper. I got several droppers full into him, but he just faded. I bawled.

Now I don't know what to do... hubs was just leaving for work as this all happened and said 'no' to processing him 'since we don't know why he died'... I am 95% sure it was dehydration and feel like his body should not be wasted. I can't do it on my own, at least not today... my mom is coming to visit tonight and I still need to go out and find the proper attire for my daughter's performance tonight. Hubs said he would 'take care of it tonight' ie bury him. Is there anyway to safely process bird at a later date?

:hit :hit :hit :hit :hit

Aww, I'm so sorry for your loss :( my best advice would be to maybe bag him and refrigerate him until you can get to processing,a long as you plan to do it within the next day or two.

I'm sorry for your loss. I'm not from PA. But I know hear there is wild game Prossers all over. So my advice to somewhere like that. Thay know what there doing if his body can be used safely thay will know how.

So sorry for loss I would just bury him then if u don't want to process him or if u have a dog turkey is a good meat for a dog u could process him that way and make some homemade dog food my sister makes it all the time she just made two batches one was carrots, beef, sweet potatoes, corn, chicken livers, ect. And the other was turkey, corn, red kidney beans, sweet potatoe, and chicken hearts. O and they both have rice in them

I think I am like seven miles away. I have fertile Pekin and chicken mutts.

Thank you very much! I got a pm from someone, but I will keep you in mind, if that doesn't pan out.

I think we're about an hour from Philipsburg. If you wanted some hatching eggs and felt like driving an extra hour you could stop by. I have ameraucana eggs and MAYBE some pure CCL eggs. They've been seperated for about a week so they may or may not be pure lol. I may have 1 or 2 olive egger eggs too :)

Thank you too! T looks like we are a little north of Phillipsburg, I will know when I get there. Hopefully there's cell phone reception, it can be patchy out there.

They are so cute! Congrats!

So sorry. It's always sad when you lose one, indeed sadder when we think we could have prevented it... :hugs. Try not to beat yourself up.

That's a good suggestion or just feed raw since it's super healthy for them. One of my dogs is 100% raw fed since she can't handle commercial dog foods. She's super fit and healthy for a bulldog.

Do u know that kibble a and bits dog food my mom buys that for her two little dogs and there teeth are so rotten and there breath is enough to make u gag and I buy my own dogs food and she gets the blue buffalo and sometimes wholesomes but being that some of that blue buffalo has been on recall I have been getting the wholesomes. this time I just bought the Rachel Ray but I won't be getting that again because it's got nothing but artificial dyes to give the food different colors it stains my dogs teeth so I have to brush them every once in a while. I pay for my own chicken feed and meds. And then I buy all of my dogs food plus her dog license and i paid for her shots and to have her fixed

You can bag and refrigerate for a day or so as suggested, then process...look for signs of injury or illness when processing (basically do a minor necropsy) if you think everything looks OK I would pressure cook the carcass for 90 Minutes and then grind it for dog food. The pressure cooking should kill about anything.

Edit to add...I would skin the bird and throw out all internal organs, legs, head and skin. Just cook the meat and bones.

We are only about half hour away from Philipsburg. DH can help you transport the eggs. He goes to Altoona 3 days a week now. Just let me know if you need help.

Did you candle Elsa's egg?

Jo (the broody who hatched out Ana and Elsa) is hatching today/tomorrow ....and I set eggs under our latest broody, Janeway, yesterday afternoon.

Hoping DH finds chicks under Jo when he gets home today....she was actually due tomorrow but 3 of her eggs are silkies, which often hatch a day early. I am stuck at work till tomorrow so will have to wait to see what she gets.

Well, I candled the girls' eggs. I couldn't see a dang thing lol. They're all green/blue eggs and they're full. I did a water test and 2 of the 3 eggs look like they were moving (one definitely) so I guess it'll just be a waiting game for a couple days to see what hatches. I will keep you updated :) Hope you have some new babies when you get home :)
