We were supposed to get rain but nothing. I'm still figuring out this message board. Any recommendations on breeds or wherever get chicks or pullets? We're not going yet, but hopefully within a couple weeks.

yes we all have our favorites....for suggestions

1 build a coop x2 times as big as you think you need....
2 get cold tolerant breeds
3 anything you think you want now will change by next year (hint, bigger coop)
4 you will need to make a decision, Large fowl or bantams...some folks mix them but there can be problems
5 egg colors are : blue, green, olive, brown, white and chocolate...
6 production birds VS heritage birds VS rare/endangered
7 duel use birds..

For getting your feet wet, some old time standard heritage breeds may be the best alternatives: Wyandottes, Opringtons, Rocks....there are many more to choose from ....hope this helps....
 
As stake mentioned there are things only the individual can answer....you need to do some research to decide what you want the chickens to do for you.

Do you want them only for high eggs production?
Do you want to be able to butcher and eat the extras or older birds?
Do you want the fancy ornamental type which make great yard candy but aren't very practical for eggs or meat?
Do you want multiple egg colors so you get a fancy looking egg carton?
Do you want the hens to raise the next generation of chicks (called brooding) or do you only want to buy started pullets or sexed chicks so you don't ever have to deal with roosters?

Understanding what will work for your yard will make the new experience more enjoyable and help reduce the stress over having to get rid of birds that you find don't work for you....

What everyone else said!

Chicks can be ordered from many hatcheries, or you can look for breeders.

Many people on here frequently sell or part with various ages birds as well as eggs to incubate, it all depends on what you want.

Regardless of what you think you want, you will change your mind and/or add something else.

Hi and welcome from the Poconos.

What the others have said about picking out birds is good advice. You need to figure out why you want chickens. Also what color eggs do you want? Blue, green, white, brown, cream, pinkish, olive? So many decisions to make. There are small and big chickens. Some are more friendly than others. We are here to help!

Build the coop ten times bigger than you think you need it. Don't think you know what breeds you want. Look up chicken math, and expect it to spread to goat math, duck math and mini cow math.
