thank you so much for explaining to me!! I was surprised when I was told this would survive the winter in the first place, especially up here...Kale is an annual, like most vegetables (asparagus, rhubarb and many herbs being the most common exceptions). It is possible for it to self-seed and have a perpetual bed that way. Most likely the confusion is because it is very winter hardy. If you plant it in the fall (early Sept is ideal in PA) it will develop quite nicely and you can harvest through much of the winter and spring. In the spring it will grow like crazy, trying to get a lot of energy so it can flower and set seed. If you keep cutting it back, it will keep trying until it gets too warm, then it gives up and grows what little blooms it can before it expires. Spinach is exactly the same, and lettuce can sometimes make it through the winter, esp if protected well. If you want suggestions about protecting it over the winter, let me know.
YES, I would love any & all suggestions...this is how I learn, and of course actual hands on.

some townships have code/ordinances that state specific room requirements for animals...if you wanted to take it to that level.Molly is the olive egger girl. I'll find out what of all of her eggs like soon. Yesterday was a long for me to drive to Skaneateles for apt hunting. Luckyly I find a very nice one. There was a woman there keeping more than 20 large fowl chickens and ducks in a tiny 4 x 4 coop and a 5 x 4 run. Those poor birds have no room to move. I tried to talk to her nicely, but she's rude.
Ok, I don't have my camera now because hubby took it to work and never got it back. If he can remember to bring it back today, I'll let everyone see the egg. I expected her to lay olive, green, or blue eggs, but grey egg is really surprising.
Our township is in the middle of changing ordinances that would allow for different animals in zoned residential areas. DH & I are on the "special committee" to help bring information needed to make these changes. It is good for the township & everyone who lives in it...now & in the future. Sometimes we have to do a little extra to get what we need, or would like to have for that matter.
****NOT saying you should to do anything about that lady, sometimes it is best to just let live...I was just giving a little bit of what we are doing right now
