Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Kale is an annual, like most vegetables (asparagus, rhubarb and many herbs being the most common exceptions). It is possible for it to self-seed and have a perpetual bed that way. Most likely the confusion is because it is very winter hardy. If you plant it in the fall (early Sept is ideal in PA) it will develop quite nicely and you can harvest through much of the winter and spring. In the spring it will grow like crazy, trying to get a lot of energy so it can flower and set seed. If you keep cutting it back, it will keep trying until it gets too warm, then it gives up and grows what little blooms it can before it expires. Spinach is exactly the same, and lettuce can sometimes make it through the winter, esp if protected well. If you want suggestions about protecting it over the winter, let me know.
thank you so much for explaining to me!! I was surprised when I was told this would survive the winter in the first place, especially up here...
YES, I would love any & all suggestions...this is how I learn, and of course actual hands on.

Molly is the olive egger girl. I'll find out what of all of her eggs like soon. Yesterday was a long for me to drive to Skaneateles for apt hunting. Luckyly I find a very nice one. There was a woman there keeping more than 20 large fowl chickens and ducks in a tiny 4 x 4 coop and a 5 x 4 run. Those poor birds have no room to move. I tried to talk to her nicely, but she's rude.
Ok, I don't have my camera now because hubby took it to work and never got it back. If he can remember to bring it back today, I'll let everyone see the egg. I expected her to lay olive, green, or blue eggs, but grey egg is really surprising.
some townships have code/ordinances that state specific room requirements for animals...if you wanted to take it to that level.

Our township is in the middle of changing ordinances that would allow for different animals in zoned residential areas. DH & I are on the "special committee" to help bring information needed to make these changes. It is good for the township & everyone who lives in it...now & in the future. Sometimes we have to do a little extra to get what we need, or would like to have for that matter.
****NOT saying you should to do anything about that lady, sometimes it is best to just let live...I was just giving a little bit of what we are doing right now

....I really do miss doing that!

okay, so I finally get to literally "put my feet up", don't know what is going on NOW...gosh, this body is falling apart!

..hahaha
Know I have been hard-charging it way too much...need to slow down for a bit. We put the remainder of the peaches in the extra fridge so that we might actually get a little break. Slows down their ripening a bit, we had them in our heated porch, it is obviously that best place to have them if you want them to ripen in a day or two
th.gif
....yeah, need a break.

We went out to harvest the cabbage and I guess that's what we needed to do to get some rain around here...got soaked , but the cabbage looked great. there a couple left in the bed that need a little more time. had trouble getting them into the crisper, had to use the door space too!..hahaha

they went in the fridge too. would LOVE to try to make sauerkraut again...last year I tried to make some, I didn't give it the attention it needed. had to toss it..hated to doing that.
Does anyone have experience in making it?...and would like to share their knowledge?...I have looked online, pinterest...of course
wink.png
, there are different ways of going about it, was just curious what works for some of you.

canned up the bean salad and some of the peaches that HAD to have something done with them.
Beans: 5-quart, 7-pint & 2- 1/2 pint
Peaches: 3-quart, 1- pint & 1- 1/2 pint
The first batch of peaches I canned didn't have any lift at the bottom. I tried to pack these in the same manner, don't know what the deal is here..?? why did they lift?...I don't like seeing that..
hmm.png
...I know it's all about the taste.

And who doesn't love sunflowers?!
love.gif

This years flowers aren't as tall, the heads aren't as large and for the amount of seeds I did sow, the plants just don't seem to be as hardy..over-all.
I had collected the seeds from last years, so I don't have to buy them, same with the marigolds...maybe it was lack of rain...
idunno.gif
, I don't know. There are a numbers of issues this year that we have been dealing with that, honestly, were never an issue before or at least not as much of one as they are now. ..always something to learn from that is for sure!!
Took a look at the brussels...they have extremely tiny buds started...we have grown them before, maybe it's just me, but they are taking forever to produce anything.
Anyone else having "growing pains" this year??

Oooh! That sounds like a good idea! Maybe I should do that too.

I should have planted cabbage this year. I can't remember why I didn't.
I remember putting the cabbage in the crock pot with a plate on it, and pushing the plate down every now and then. I know someone on here was wringing the cabbage, and killing their hands about two years ago.

I see what you are saying. It bugs me too. Since you mentioned rain, maybe it was from humidity.

Me.

Yes, My tomatoes are taking forever, and I don't see more cucumbers.

our grpe toms have been doing well, and the romas are just starting, but the roma plants themselves look awful....like they have blight. I m just hoping to get a half decent crop..DH would like some stewed toms this year , and we are getting low on our sauce. I wanted to do more salsa, but it looks like i will be luck to get the essentials.

girl you are sassy..."good question"...got yourself a thread and now look how much you've grown..

, I know we need to "talk"...it takes me forever just to post what i have been, this THING is so flipping frustrating

....it will be going well, then next thing you know..DARRRrrrr

The late cucumber crop we put in is doing very well, hope they continue to grow without issue. would love to put pickles up. DH really enjoys the fridge ones, but they don't last as long as the canned. Plus, I wanted to try to make a good dill-relish...any recipes, anyone??? I am all ears..which is pretty ridiculous looking to tell you the truth

I am torn between killing the chick that won't shut up (I am kidding!) and putting it out with its moms. I was going to move the moms finally, but I think they still only have one chick. I am having trouble being patient with Duckling here. IDK why. She isn't a problem.
So, it will stay in the incubator tonight, and tomorrow I will deal with the girls. Lesson learned. Don't under estimate a mother's desire to be in a nest box. She will break down that barrier!
